A few months ago, Sony unveiled its new flagship smartphone: the Xperia Z2, which is still awaiting its release. One of the taglines for the phone called the Z2’s gear “the world’s best smartphone camera”. And it seems like the company may not be exaggerating at all. The phone just scored a 79 out of 100 on the DxOMark Mobile Scale, which puts it above Nokia’s 41 Megapixel 808 PureView as the highest rated smartphone camera out there.
Amidst all the noise generated by the NAB Show in the past two days already – with 4K Cameras making the headlines on every photography blog out there, or with companies like Blackmagic flooring audiences with how much they’re evolving the technology of cinema – There’s quite a few cool announcements that get lost in the middle. One of them is from Digital Bolex, and it’s a monochrome camera (based off the original D16) called the D16M.
This is pretty unexpected, but it looks like DJI is starting to expand its range of products. If you’ve seen previous articles I’ve written, you’ll know how much I geek out over the DJI Phantom line. They’re calling it the world’s first user-upgradable 4K digital film camera: Blackmagic’s URSA has been announced and it may take you by quite a bit of surprise. I want to get something out of the way first: These are meant for high-end feature films and documentaries, and the two URSA models announced today are going to be shipping in July at prices of $6,000 and $6,500.

DJI Phantom quadcopters are drones that take videos and photos from up in the air, like any basic helicopter shot you’ll see in movies. They’re effective, durable, and stay where they need to stay even if the wind is against them. And now the company is announcing their newest addition to the line: the Phantom Vision 2+.
At their NAB Show today, Sony made certain that ‘4K’ would be their hot word for audiences to catch on to. It’s what came up on the screen as the live stream even began, and continued to be spoken about for its presence in medicine, business, filmmaking, and consumer use. Sony made sure that 4k touched every single topic they covered. One of those topics was the company’s announcement of the full frame Sony A7S, a camera introduced at the end of the segment that we’ve been anticipating for a while now.
J.P. and the crew over at The Slanted Lens took six cameras for a shoot out. Some of them are as high-end as the Canon 1DC, while some are as crappy as the iPad (not the iPad air, just the iPad).
The shootout was done on a pretty sunny day (so the iDevices can even start to compare) with no strobes, again so the iDevices will not be at a disadvantage.

Video and autofocus don’s usually go hand in hand. After all, focus is a creative decision and the camera, sophisticated as it may be, can’t know where you want to focus in a scene.
What you usually do is pre-mark focus points and change between them using a programmable follow focus or a focus puller (think a person dedicated for shifting focus).
Andra seemed to have solved both issues in an ingenious way. It provides state-of-the-art iPad controlled follow focus, which is nice, but not new. What’s new is the way they pull autofocus and focus shifting. Rather than pre-focus key elements of the shot and mark them, the Andra system allows using a small sensor to continuously monitor a an object in space. [Read More…]
