In a remarkable achievement, Canon Inc. proudly announced two of its latest production milestones. The camera brand manufactured over 110 million EOS Series interchangeable-lens cameras as of March this year and 160 million RF/EF series interchangeable lenses in May. That’s a lot of cameras and lenses.
The 110 millionth EOS series camera was the EOS R6 Mark II, released in December 2022. The 160 millionth interchangeable lens to roll off the production line was the RF100mm F2.8 L MACRO IS USM, launched in July 2021.
Canon named its groundbreaking EOS system after the Greek goddess of the dawn and debuted alongside the EF series of interchangeable lenses in March 1987. It represented a significant leap forward as the world’s first fully-electronic mount system for silver halide film AF SLR cameras.
Canon’s innovation continued with the introduction of the EOS Kiss Digital (known as the EOS Digital Rebel or EOS 300D in certain regions) in September 2003, marking the advent of digital SLR cameras.
Over the years, Canon has pushed the boundaries of technology, introducing game-changing products like the professional-grade EOS-1D series and the pioneering EOS 5D series, which revolutionized digital SLR video recording. In October 2018, Canon unveiled the next-generation EOS R System. Canon’s EOS series has maintained its position as one of the world’s leading digital SLR camera brands for over two decades.
Canon’s EF lens lineup has also constantly evolved by incorporating cutting-edge technologies. These lenses have introduced innovations such as the Ultrasonic Motor (USM), Image Stabilizer (IS) technology, and the multilayered diffractive optical (DO) element. In 2018, Canon expanded its range of lenses by introducing the RF Lens as part of the EOS R System, offering 115 lens models.
Canon is continuously enhancing and expanding the EOS series and the RF and EF lens lineup. Rumours of the EOS R1 have been circulating for some time, and it’s set to become THE flagship camera if those rumours prove correct.
