Useful Tips For Shooting Time-Lapse At Night

Time-lapse photography can be used to stunning effect. The often-dreamy vistas passing by the camera allow the viewer an amazing insight to a location beyond what a still image may offer. I have spent more time than I care admit to watching videos on Vimeo and YouTube of amazing time-lapse productions of places far away that I may never visit myself.

While I admire these productions any chance I get, I have never taken the plunge into finding out how to create them for myself. Jay P Morgan from over at The Slanted Lens shares a guide and some tips on how to capture the images needed to create a stationary time-lapse at night.

7 DIY Photography Tips Using Household Objects

Photography can be expensive! So, it’s lovely to come across cool tips for using every day, household objects in your photography which can both help reduce the price of creating cool images or even help protect your gear.

Markus Berger and the team over at the COOPH YouTube channel has just released a new video featuring seven very cool little tips (and a bonus one at the end) doing just that: it shows simple, every day objects, used to great effect. More than one of these I had never thought of, so it’s well worth checking out these DIY hints used in effect. Read more below the jump.

The World Cup has been thrilling so far. Despite the Australians bowing out early with three straight losses, I have loved every minute I have seen as the world’s best compete. With just four games to go, the excitement is high as the world wonders if Brazil could achieve a World Cup victory at home.

There has been incredible goal after incredible goal. And on the sidelines there has been a team of photographers specialising in sports and football photography capturing every moment for the world’s press.

Robert Cianflone, a Getty Images photographer, is one of those photographers. In 2014 alone, I have followed his Instagram account with awe has he covered both the Olympics in Russia and now the World Cup in Brazil. I was curious about what it is like to be covering the World Cup, so I reached out to him to get some answers.

Adobe Is Taking A Big Bite Into The Hardware Market, Competes With Wacom

If you think Adobe, you think software. With the release of new iOS applications for iPad, Adobe today also announces new hardware to break into the market previously dominated by Wacom. With the release of a new stylus and digital ruler, Adobe has come out swinging by turning the iPad into a high definition graphics tablet.

Previously, Adobe have excelled in producing software and dominated within the photographic and design industries. Now, with new hardware, they are further cementing themselves as the leader of innovation. If you own an iPad already, no longer will you have to buy a graphics tablet in addition, which you likely use with Photoshop anyway. Instead, by using the free iOS apps, particularly Adobe Photoshop Mix, these two pieces of hardware allow you to expand your work into areas you may not have previously ventured with fine control in editing and design work around your photographs.

I find this bold step fascinating. Adobe has long had a firm foothold in the industry as a software giant, but now it is taking that extra step to go further. The hardware items are listed below:

Adobe’s Major CC Update Puts The Photography Mobile Workflow Front And Center

As part of Adobe’s 2014 Update Bonanza! taking place today, there are a number of changes that are tailored purely for photographers. Adobe has long been associated with desktop photography software, but the company has been taking notes and listening to its customers and tailoring the experience for their key market.

Despite initial criticisms of the Creative Cloud subscription service,  Adobe have embraced and furthered the software. This is largely with thanks to the access Creative Cloud has provided. Through the service, Adobe has been able to constantly drop updates and micro-features to customers as well as identify key areas of use and gather constant feedback to improve their services.

While there are many updates to other apps and the release of multiple iOS apps today, we will focus purely on those relevant for photographers. There are exciting changes to both photography applications within their Creative Cloud range as well as to their subscription formats.

Personally, I am still using Adobe Photoshop CS5. I purchased it while still a student (before I had to pay full price, although a trip from Australia to the US to buy the software may have been nice…) and I have never found a reason to justify the upgrade to CC services. Simply, the plans have never really enticed me for what I needed. They have always been a touch expensive for my liking (especially at first within Australia upon release) and offered me more than I have needed.

Today, I’m excited. With updates to Photoshop with very cool new functions that almost makes my CS5 look like a version of MS Paint with a nicer UI,  and a new plan that has been created purely for photographers who only want applications applicable to them, I know that I will soon be throwing my credit card at Adobe. Add to that Adobe’s break into the hardware market, and today is a big day for Adobe.

Adobe Previews New Photoshop Tools Coming To Creative Cloud – Look For Focus Masks

Adobe just started hinting on their next batch of releases for CC cloud coming up on the 18th, and a quick poke around youtube discovered this video revealing one of the new tools coming to Photoshop CC.

The video not only hints at the new feature, but fully demonstrates the new tool that allows the “automatic selection based off of pixels that are in focus verses out of focus.”

How Six Of The World’s Most Difficult Ballet Moves Were Captured In Slow Motion

When we came across this video, we were captivated. I’ve always been in awe of ballet dancers. They possess the most amazing hidden strength, machine-like precision, and grace beyond words.

What happens when you ask six incredibly talented ballet dancers to show you their hardest move and film it in slow motion? You gain an even greater appreciation for the skill they possess. This is exactly what Jason Aldag from the Washington Post’s PostTV did and the results are fascinating.

Aldag told me he wanted to show the Washington Post audience “something unexpected.” But, in doing so, he’s shown the world what these dancers can do. He even admitted that he “knew that ballet dancers were athletic but [he] was blown away by what the Washington Ballet crew showed [him] that day.”

The Amusing/Horrifying Texts Between Photojournalists And Their Editors

A brand new Tumblr account has emerged in the last two weeks. Simply named “Photo Editor Texts” the Tumblr shares the amusing texts between photojournalists on assignment and their editors back in the office.

Ah, Tumblr, you a place of wonderment. Between the amazing photography related blogs (such as Zack Arias’ now retired 1,500 Q&A Tumblr) and amazing photo projects shared there, it’s a wonder I get much work done at all. But theres also a whole lot of ‘shipping of fictional characters and even more fan-love toward Supernatural and Dr Who, plenty of amusing cat gifs, and some genuinely hilarious people. Occasionally, you come across an amusing little project like this one.

Protect Your Photos From Rights Grabbing

Over the weekend, the team at VOTogs posted an article revealing a government organization potentially taking advantage of photographers via rather sneaky means. The Vivid Sydney arts and cultural event, headed by Destination NSW, naturally has a Facebook page (screen-captured with the lead image) where people can find all the necessary information about the event. This is all pretty casual, but what got the VOTOGs (and us) is that hidden away on the About page was a set of terms in addition to Facebook’s Terms in which it was stated that members of the public posting photographs on the Facebook page in effect gave Destination NSW the license to use said photographs in any way they saw fit, free of charge, for as long as they wished.

Kyoto Moves To Make Upskirting a Painful Offence

Earlier today, The Japan Times released that officials in Kyoto, Japan, had revised ordinance in order to crack down on the practice of upskirt photography (making unauthorized photographs under a woman’s skirt). The highly popular tourist destination in Japan is flooded with tourists every spring, mostly high school students, and “upskirting” had reached disturbing levels, with even “a whole subgenre of magazines” existing for individuals to sell their images.

This perverted practice has always been outlawed in Japan, but only in public places such as shopping centers, railway stations, and public transport. Individuals taking these photographs had found a loophole which made them untouchable by police by taking their photos in places not covered under the definition of a “public place.” The change in ordinance has seen the expansion of the “scope of protection” to include places such as schools, workplaces and hospitals, and has increased penalties for the use of hidden cameras in areas such as hot spring baths, changing rooms and public restrooms. Penalties can now be as high as ¥1 million (about $9815) or a year in jail.
