It’s been a big day for Canon announcements with the launch of the EOS R6 mark II, a new EL-5 speedlight, and a brand new updated 135mm telephoto lens. The RF 135mm f/1.8L IS USM lens (try saying that in a hurry!) is part of Canon’s RF range of lenses designed specifically for their mirrorless camera line-up.

According to the specs, the lens “offers an engaging mixture of high sharpness and shallow depth of field, making it an ideal choice for portrait subjects.”

I’m primarily a stills photographer, however, when DSLRs started to get decent video capabilities I started to enjoy dabbling in shooting video. I thought it would be easy, just apply the same principles as photography. I was in for a shock. Turns out, shooting and making compelling videos is a whole different ball game than shooting stills.

In this excellent video from Adorama, filmmaker Aidin Robbins shares his top 10 tips to quickly turn your films from ‘meh’ to ‘yeah’.

Three adolescents saunter along the shoreline, seemingly just killing time. They are playfully wrestling one another as they explore, watched by a quizzical red fox. These are, of course, not teenagers, but polar bears, seen through the lens of the Tundra Buggy Cam.

Polar Bears International (PBI), a conservation non-profit is currently tracking and filming these polar bears in Churchill, Canada while they wait for the sea ice to form on Hudson Bay. When the ice forms, they can go and hunt for seals.

We are all about Hallowe’en at DIYP, and to celebrate we wanted to share this incredible image of the Bat Nebula. It really does look a lot like a bat, flying through space surrounded by tiny stars.

The image was captured by the RiDK 500 telescope at Observatorio El Sauce, Chile, and processed by Mark Hansen and Mike Selby.

It’s not unusual in landscape photography to put a lot of effort into the process of taking photographs, only to come home later and be disappointed when you download your images. You’ve probably researched your location in advance, got up before dawn, and hiked in the dark. You’ve reached your destination and now you’re just waiting for that golden light to hit your subject.

Doing all of these things will of course increase your chances of creating compelling images. However, there is still no guarantee. In this video, landscape photographer Mark Denney walks us through his thought process during an early morning landscape shoot and shares his best tip to improve your luck.

Canon is apparently all set to announce both the EOS R6 Mark II and the RF 135mm f/1.8L IS USM lens on November 2nd. Or at least that’s what some very strong rumors are suggesting anyway after Canon placed some teasers recently. The updated version of the popular mirrorless camera the  EOS R6 has been speculated to be coming soon for a while now, however, this is the first time we have seen any sign of when it will be announced.

Prices and specs have also been released on the Canon Watch site. However, these are very much still rumors and nothing has been made certain yet.

From now on you’ll have to pay to use Pantone colors in Adobe software

From now on you'll have to pay to use Pantone colours in Adobe software

If you open up a PSD file and find areas of the image filled with black, your immediate reaction is probably to panic. But not to worry, if this happens there’s probably a very simple (yet costly) explanation. From now on, Adobe is no longer licensed to use Pantone’s colors.

So what does this mean exactly? Adobe has begun to phase out all the Pantone Color Books from its software which includes Photoshop, InDesign, and Illustrator. If you have any Pantone colors in your work, even in old files from 20 years ago, you will get a message telling you that areas that have those colors will be rendered in black.

A Madagascan Aye-Aye lemur has been captured on camera picking its own nose and eating it. Scientists say that this is the first time this type of lemur has been recorded doing this activity. The Naural History Museum of London reports that there are only 12 known species of primate known to pick their noses, including humans.

The aye-aye was filmed by Prof Anne-Claire Fabre from the University of Bern. “I wanted to know where is this finger going?” she told the BBC, and so prompting scientific research.

Fighter pilot films himself ejecting from crashing plane

A video shot in first person point of view shows a Russian fighter pilot ejecting from his crashing plane. The footage has emerged from the Russia-Ukraine war and shows the pilot exiting the aircraft and landing safely in a field some distance away. We later see the aircraft consumed by fire.

The pilot was carrying a GoPro-like action camera on his helmet or body, so we can get a pretty clear idea of what ejecting from a combat aircraft flying low level looks like. Basically, it’s not something I’d like to experience first-hand.
