USA-based landscape and nature photographer Brent Clark has won the 2022 Natural Landscape Photography
Awards. His images of sweeping sands and autumn forests wowed judges with their slightly abstract feel and cohesive umber color palette.

The award is the very first international photography competition of its kind. Now in its second year, the competition was created to promote the very best landscape photography by digital and film photographers who value realism and
authenticity in their work. The competition established a set of important rules to avoid the excessive digital
editing techniques that have become commonplace in landscape photography. Here are the rest of the winning images.

Spectacular view of Earth caught on astronaut’s space walk camera

American astronauts Frank Rubio and Josh Cassada successfully completed NASA’s first spacewalk since March. The spacewalk lasted a whopping 7 hours and 11 minutes and served to complete several objectives on the outside of the International Space Station.

NASA live streamed the entire space walk. It’s not just an incredible thing to watch, but the astronaut’s helmet cams managed to shoot some amazing footage of our own planet Earth in the process.

Instagram now lets you evoke emotion by adding music to your posts

We all know the power music can have from watching movies. A simple switching up of a soundtrack can completely sway a viewer to experience different emotions even when watching identical footage. In fact, research shows us that music has as powerful an effect on our brains as cocaine.

So it’s no accident then, that Instagram is harnessing this power by allowing users to add a music track to their ordinary posts in the feed. Skeptics could say that it’s just yet another way that Instagram is trying to keep up with rival social media app TikTok which has used music right from the start.

Wild octopuses caught on video throwing trash at each other for first time

It seems like throwing trash at one another is not behavior isolated to politicians. Scientists in Australia have witnessed wild octopuses throwing sand and shells at each other in a series of videos. This is previously unrecorded behavior and the researchers believe that it is intentional.

The rather gloriously named gloomy octopuses (Octopus tetricus) were caught in the act off the coast of Jervis Bay in New South Wales, Australia. Scientists analyzed 24 hours of footage filmed across several days and found 102 instances of the behavior in 10 different animals.

Swiss bank’s chief risk officer quits to pursue career as professional photographer

Swiss Bank UBS’ Chief Risk Officer has stepped down this week to pursue a career as a professional photographer. Executive board member Christian Bluhm is currently in charge of risk at UBS Global Wealth Management. As of May 2023, he will be solely focusing on his photography business, a statement from the bank says.

According to Bluhm’s website, he is currently renovating a photography studio and gallery which is expected to open in 2023.

New York welcomes new Photofairs photography show in September 2023

A brand new photography fair will be coming to New York City in September 2023. The fair will be called Photofairs New York and is run by the same group that stage Photofairs Shanghai.

Photofairs Shanghai is currently Asia’s largest commercial photography event, and the New York event will be based on the same idea. The fair is described as being “a new contemporary art fair dedicated to photo-based works, digital art, and new media.”

Canon already sorry for delays on the newly announced EOS R6 Mark II

Canon announced three brand new products last week: the EOS R6 mark II, the RF 135mm 1.8 L  lens, and the EL-5 speedlight designed for the mirrorless range of camera bodies. However, an announcement on Canon’s Japanese site was posted just two days later, apologizing already for delays to these products.

Of course, delays on camera equipment and indeed on many products since the start of the pandemic in 2020 is nothing new. This is basically just a part of the ongoing logistical delays and chip shortage.

Today is your last chance to capture a total lunar eclipse until 2025!

Last month parts of Europe, Asia, and Africa got to see and possibly photograph a partial solar eclipse. Today, it’s North America’s turn. But because everything in America is bigger and better you guys get a total lunar eclipse to enjoy. This will be the last chance to see this phenomenon until 2025, so dust off those telephoto lenses and let’s get to it!

Firstly, what is a lunar eclipse? In simple terms (ie. I’m not a scientist so I will explain it in the least sciencey way known to mankind), it’s when the earth gets directly between the sun and the moon. This means that none of the sun’s light can fall on the moon. The Earth is quite literally throwing shade.

A close up of a curious croc wins this year’s Mangrove Photographer of the Year Award

A close-up portrait of an American crocodile surrounded by luscious mangroves has won this year’s Mangrove Photographer of the Year Awards, run by the Mangrove Action Project. The image was captured by Tanya Houppermans in Cuba.

The competition is now in its 8th year, and over 2,000 images were submitted from 68 countries. The images reveal “fascinating insights into the world of mangroves, while challenging us to consider both our place in the natural world and our responsibility to protect it.” Check out the winning images below.

How to get beautiful golden sunlight for perfect portraits even on cloudy days

The city I live in boasts 300 days of sunshine a year. Except on days when I have a photoshoot booked and need sunshine, it seems! So what to do when you’ve got a client and you want beautiful golden hour light, but the weather just won’t cooperate? You fake it of course!

That’s the beautiful thing about learning to shoot with any kind of light. You aren’t beholden to the whims of metrology. In this video, Lindsay Adler walks us through her setup to create a very natural-looking golden light for her portrait shot.
