This project brings photography and knitting together, making “blending in” cool again

There are people who want to stand out, but also those who feel better when they blend in. But photographer Joseph Ford brings these two together, no matter how strange that may sound. His photography project Knitted Camouflage simply can’t get unnoticed. And yet, the subjects in his photos blend in with the environment.

Joseph’s subjects wear knitted clothes that blend in with the surroundings, creating a fun project that will often make you look twice.

Joseph draws inspiration from his environment. Colors and patterns of the streets turn into knitted clothes his models wear on the shoot. Joseph’s colleague Nina Dodd is in charge of the knitting. She spends forty hours making clothing for each project. That’s a lot of knitting, but the job doesn’t end there.

When the clothes are done, Joseph spends quite a lot of time to make the clothes perfectly aligned with the surroundings. He typically spends at least half a day to create each of the photos that make this project. I’ve always thought of blending in as being dull, and I’ve preferred clothes and accessories that stand out. Joseph’s project Knitted Camouflage takes “blending in” to a whole new level, and yet, his subjects and photos are anything but dull. The photos are colorful and visually appealing, and he captures the personality of his subjects. Although it’s all about blending in, these photos can’t go unnoticed.
