Canon 6D Mark II dynamic range results are disappointing

There has been a great hype about the new Canon 6D Mark II. Now that it’s officially released, the first dynamic range test results are coming in – and they are not good. As it turns out, the 6D Mark II has less dynamic range than models like 5D Mark IV or 1D X Mark II. What’s more, the results show that it even has less dynamic range than some of the APS-C bodies like Canon 80D. While this may not be a deal breaker for some photographers, it does affect your shots and the amount of detail you can get in editing.
DPReview has performed a dynamic range test, comparing the Canon 6D Mark II with a range of other cameras. They brightened a series of increasingly dark sets of exposures and compared the results between the cameras.
The 6D Mark II starts to get noisy sooner than the comparable Nikon D750, and even before the APS-C Canon 80D at the same settings.
They also performed the ISO invariance test, taking the same exposure shot at different ISO settings. This is one of the examples how Canon 6D Mark II compares with Nikon D750.
If you process RAW images from low ISO and what to get more details from the shadows, you will have much less flexibility. The electronic noise starts appearing sooner than you may expect from a camera like this, especially when compared to the APS-C model 80D.
According to DPReview, Canon’s metering system tends to underexpose the images when the subjects are backlit, and it doesn’t properly expose for the faces. So in situations like this, when you want to brighten up the subject, you may get a noticeable amount of noise in the shadows.

Keeping my old 6D only as long as there are native Sigma Art lenses for the Sony E-Mount … then my Canon time is over … after almost 20 years …
The fuji system is great.
I did see that it seems like added global sharpening to the 6d2 that is not applied to the 1dx2 shots. So whilst I expected the 6d2 to be better, it’s not a fair comparison.

Why didn’t they compare it to the old 6D? Is dynamic range improved over the old 6D?

I have no real interest for those bodies, but it seems they are just
ridiculous .. a correct JPG from their raw 6DII file at -3EV seems to be
really good (at least much better than what they compare :

I imagine those blogers from
dpreview haven’t any idea how to use ACR and they are just used compare
pre-washed exmor raw files to full Canon Raw files without correcting
things between those types of files.

Exactly what does everyone expect when Canon takes 4 years to come out with a 4 year old camera, they have done this again and again and again!, I compared many images from the orig 6D to this one, Cannot see a $1000 difference.

Sergi Yavorski spend a few hours and download a bunch of 6D images from Flikr like I did, then download the ones from Canon for the 6D MK II zoom in on every one and there is no difference that can be seen in fact the orig 6D has better micro contrast and color rendering on some images all were on the 24-105 L Canon, AND the only TRUE test is raw straight out of the camera with no processing at all,
Well compare a Nikon D5 to a Nikon D3300 and take photos of a bowl of bananas and apples. Gee I don’t see a $5000 difference.
Look at pictures from a Nikon D90 and a D5. Gee I don’t see a $7000 difference.
I don’t see a difference between a Sony RX100 v1 and the Sony A9. What $difference…$4000
The 6D ii has lots of improvements over the 6D.
Raw means you get a full digital file. It doesn’t mean the company does not do some processing to it. All camera companies do some processing to their RAW files. It is something that we have no control over and they choose what they want to control.
Is anyone really surprised it has less DR that a 5D Mark IV ? ROFL. Not even in the same price range. It is what it is , entry level full frame.
If you want the utmost dynamic range , pony up the $$$$ and pay for it !
What a crock of absolute shit. Even Nikon’s lowly beginner bodies share the same 24mp sensor as the mid tier models that pump out 14 stops of dynamic range. If you want the utmost dynamic range, switch to Nikon. End story.

Switched to Nikon (D750) autumn last year only because of Canon’s disappointing dynamic range even in their latest sensors. Had hope that 6D MkII would be some kind of a game changer. Unfortunately, as it is obvious, it is not. Not even close to two years old Nikons. Only in price, and that should be an entry FF? Yea, maybe for a half of the price. Sorry Canon, still keep the trusty old 5D MkII for 135L and STM 40mm, but D750 for everything else.
I used to shoot a 7D many moons ago actually, but then realised how poor the flexibility the files had, and how inferior their flash system was compared to Nikon. Haven’t looked back since.

Ja en nee, de 6D was qua image quality het zelfde als/beter dan de 5D III. Je hebt allen een heel ander feature pakket en ergonomics. Zeker als je nu gaat kijken naar de concurrentie doet de 6D II gewoon echt onder aan de rest.

You mean the same DPReview that used to compare different cameras by using different lenses “to normalize field if view?” That one? They throw up a ton of content masquerading as sound testing but they will always be hacks. FWIW, I’m f****** sick of Canon and how they manage their lineup by nerfing certain features so I’m no fanboy, but DPR has zero cred as far as I’m concerned.
This is the single biggest reason I don’t shoot much with my Canon bodies; well that and I don’t have may Canon lenses. But I mostly shoot deep shade available light, and my Nikons just eat Canon’s lunch in dynamic range at lower ISOs. I can deal with Canon’s weird colors, but not the one to two stop lower DR
