Quick And Dirty: How To Pre-Prepare Instagram Posts
Dec 18, 2015

Creating posts for later posting in Instagram is a drag. Right now the options are pretty limited. You can use an app like Grum (which violates Instagram’s Terms Of Service, not a good idea). Or maybe, you can create yourself a reminder to post something and post it manually later. None of those options is very enticing.
Photographer Eric Pare shared a quick and (extremely) dirty tip on how to prepare Instagram posts and publish them later. It is still a bit manual and definitely not elegant, but it works.
The secret is to “post” to Instagram without any active internet connection. Instagram will try posting then (obviously) fail, and will wait for you to re-initiate the post.
So edit the photo, put your tags and description, and right before you hit the publish key start flight mode (you can quickly access it via the android notification screen or iOS’s setting screen)

Now you can turn flight mode on. The photo will not be posted until you manually hit the resubmit button

how can that be a feasible solution. No one can even get to you if the phone is in flight mode. This is hardly a tip
You just turn flight mode off once you’ve gone through the steps.
This has to be the most inane, ridiculous waste of time post ever. Classic click bait.
Thanks a lot for your feedback Dick, this is really appreciated :) Have a nice day.
Different stokes for different folks, this is very useful to me.
What did I just read? Is this something anybody worries about.
Why exactly wouldn’t you just upload the media….
My guess is it allows a user to create multiple posts and then have them posted in a disbursed manner instead of a flood of photos, and metrics show publishing at certain times gets more views. It isn’t necessary for me so much…I know most of my followers personally so I know I am not doing it that way.
Good tip on hacking the service. Does it hold it if you turn the airplane mode off? I suspect it does. If it doesn’t, this is less useful.
To all the naysayers, there are good reasons for this. Don’t be so negative.
yeah it sticks there after you left the airplane mode. That’s why I do this ;)
Hmm… I’ve used several services before start using Grum. All of them banned, but Grum so long in business as my colleague use them for a while and it seems they do not violate any terms
All of these negative comments for a post I actually find useful. For some of us, Instagram is a big time drain but also a big part of an online presence. Once you’ve got your perfect edit, caption and hashtags and finally ready to post, it may not be the best time statistically (i.e. 4am EST). I work with several fashion bloggers and having scheduled posts is definitely a thing. My girlfriend actually taught me this trick and with her having sets of images lined up, it’s a great way to stagger posts without having to put in the work each and every time you want to share something.
Don’t be so closed minded and quick to be negative if something doesn’t work for YOU.
thanks Kevin ;)
This is actually a nice hack if you just want to use Instagram to edit a photo, but just want to save it on your phone. (It will be saved in the Instagram folder) Just hit the cancel button after you get the connection error.
I want to do this, but for $4 a month? for $5 a month I get unlimited backup through Code 42 Crash Plan. Seems a bit steep if you ask me.
Hi, Eric! In your post you say, that Grum violates Instagram’s Terms Of Service – that’s not true! Actually, we have the opposite situation here :) Grum works in strict compliance with Instagram/Facebook Terms of Use for absolute safety, and that’s why we won’t be shut down.
But thanks for mentioning us, anyways) Good luck.
hey Ivan! This post dates from 2015! I don’t know what Grum is. The reference to Grum has been made by the author of this article, not by me :)
I use Google Keep to prepare the Hashtags and Text. Plus as a Bonus I can write them on the Computer. Makes it a lot easier to Post them at the right time. And if you want to prepare the Image you can use the Airplane mode Method and Cancel it. When it is time to Post select the image from the Instagram Folder, Copy in the Text from Google Keep and of you go. Not Perfect but the closest I got.
