GoPro’s New Close-Up Filters Bring Blurry Backgrounds to Action Cameras

Action cameras are built to capture the whole adventure, but that wide, everything-in-focus look is not always ideal for talking-to-camera videos, portraits, or close-up product shots. GoPro is addressing that limitation with three new close-up filters for its MISSION 1 cameras, letting creators bring subjects closer and blur the background without changing lenses or adjusting focus manually.
Made by PolarPro, the new diopter filters slide over the lens or a compatible neutral density filter on the GoPro MISSION 1 and MISSION 1 PRO. They use fixed focus, so the main task is choosing the right strength for the distance to the subject.

Three strengths for different shots
GoPro offers the filters in +0.5, +1 and +2 diopter strengths. The higher the number, the closer the camera can focus and the more pronounced the subject separation can become. Each option also has a limited focus range, so these are accessories for specific types of shots rather than filters to leave on all day.
The +0.5 diopter is the more flexible choice for vlogging, travel footage, and lifestyle content. It focuses on subjects from 50cm to 150cm away, offering a modest amount of background blur while keeping enough working distance for handheld narration.
The +1 filter narrows that range to 45cm to 90cm, making it more suitable for tighter framing. At +2, the focus range becomes 30cm to 50cm, which is better suited to details, small products and close-up footage.
The trade-off is straightforward: stronger close-up effects leave less room between the camera and the subject. Anything outside the selected filter’s focus range will not remain sharp, so users will need to frame shots with those limits in mind.

No focus adjustment, but some limitations
The filters are made from optical-grade, multi-coated glass, which GoPro says is designed to preserve sharpness and color accuracy. They attach directly to the camera lens and can also be used over compatible MISSION 1 series ND filters.
Because focus is fixed, users do not have to calibrate the filter or adjust a focus ring. That simplicity should suit creators who want a repeatable close-up look without adding much complexity to a compact shooting setup.
There are limits, though. GoPro warns that high vibration and fast camera movements may affect video stabilization when using the strongest +2 diopter. It is worth testing that filter before taking it on a fast moving activity, especially if smooth footage is a priority.
A small filter with a closer point of view
The standalone +0.5 Close-Up Filter costs $49.99, while the three-filter set costs $99.99 and includes a travel case. Both are available globally through GoPro’s online store. GoPro Premium and Premium+ subscribers receive a 20% discount.
These filters will not turn a fixed-focus action camera into a system with interchangeable lenses, but they offer a simple way to expand its close-up capabilities. For MISSION 1 owners who shoot people, products or details at close range, the right diopter could make the difference between footage that feels distant and a shot that pulls viewers right into the scene.
