7Artisans 10mm f/2.5

7Artisans has launched a new AF 10mm f/2.5, a full-frame fisheye with autofocus, available for Sony E, Nikon Z, and L mounts. At $449, it’s pretty affordable, and aimed at skate photographers, vloggers, and anyone who shoots fast-moving subjects. As a concert photographer, I find it tempting, too.

Fisheye lenses are usually manual focus only. That’s fine for landscapes or other kinds of slow-paced shooting. But if you’re filming someone ripping down a halfpipe or running toward the camera, manual focus becomes practically useless (at least if you’re a little slower, like I am). So, adding an AF to a fisheye lens, and still keeping it affordable, is quite refreshing and opens up a ton of possibilities.

The 185° angle of view is extreme – wider than your eye can see. The 5.9″ minimum focus distance makes that exaggeration even more dramatic. Get close to your subject, and the distortion gets wild. That’s the whole point of a fisheye, and this lens leans into it.

As for the physical design, a clicked aperture ring is a nice touch for stills shooters. The lens also packs two customizable function buttons and is built with all-metal housing. On the downside, there’s a lack of image stabilization, but if your camera has it, I guess you’re good.

At 1.1 lb, it’s not featherlight, but it’s manageable for handheld use. Speaking of practicality, this lens seems squarely aimed at content creators and action sports photographers who want a quirky lens without spending a fortune.
