Squarespace Now Says Its Price Increase Was “An Error”, Reduces Prices for Some Photographers

Remember that Squarespace price increase we told you about, the one that had photographers openly plotting their exit? Well, Squarespace is now telling some customers it was just a mistake.

What the Correction Email Says

Users have started receiving emails from Squarespace walking back the numbers from the original price-increase notice. The email opens by saying the company is writing “to correct a pricing error in a recent email” about the customer’s subscription price, and blames “an internal error that misapplied prices on certain plans.”

Squarespace is clear that no one was actually overcharged:

 As the previous email was a notice only, we can confirm you have not been charged as part of this issue. We apologize for any confusion this may have caused.

The email then lists a corrected price – in one case, an Annual Standard website plan lands at $165.00 a year, effective on the customer’s next renewal. No action required, it says, unless you want to make changes from your billing panel.

Convenient Timing

Here’s the thing: Squarespace didn’t say a word about pricing publicly when the original hikes went out. It sent no memo, no blog post, nothing on the record. It took a wave of public backlash from photographers, filmmakers, and designers. One Redditor’s post was particularly popular, writing about Squarespace’s price climb of over 61 percent since 2021.

After the latest wave of backlash, it seems to me that Squarespace is quietly trying to repair the damage and stop people from walking away and finding alternatives. For now, we don’t know whether every affected customer gets a correction, or just enough to cool off the loudest critics. I couldn’t find public discussions about it at the moment of writing this, but one of my photographer friends got the email.

What You Should Do

If you got the original price-increase email, check your inbox for a follow-up “correction.” If you haven’t gotten one yet, it doesn’t mean you won’t – or that you should assume your original number stands, either. Confirm your actual renewal price directly in your billing panel before you make any decisions about staying or leaving.
