Sony FX5 Announced: $4,899 Full-Frame Cinema Camera With Internal RAW and Open Gate 5K Shooting

Sony has announced the FX5, the latest addition to its Cinema Line FX series. It’s a full-frame video-only body that brings two features that the FX3 and FX6 don’t have: internal X-OCN RAW recording and Open Gate shooting. Built around a newly developed fully stacked Exmor RS CMOS sensor paired with a BIONZ XR2 processor, the FX5 is positioned as a compact, production-ready cinema camera for solo operators and small crews who don’t want to be tethered to an external recorder.

The sensor offers 15+ stops of dynamic range in S-Log3, with a Sensor Overdrive Mode pushing that to 16 stops. There are three native base ISOs – 800, 4000, and 12800, useful for shifting between controlled and low-light environments without fighting noise. The Dual Gain Shooting mode, new to the FX series, essentially combines two simultaneous exposure readings from the sensor to extend latitude and improve shadow detail. It’s the kind of feature you’d previously only find on Sony’s higher-end VENICE cameras. Open Gate shoots a 3:2 full-pixel readout across the entire sensor, which gives you more framing flexibility in post and is especially useful for vertical content or reframing for different aspect ratios.

For frame rates, the FX5 shoots 5K up to 60 fps and 4K up to 120 fps, with FHD stretching to 240 fps. Those are all via HDMI output, though, internal recording tops out at 4992 x 3328 in X-OCN LT at up to 59.94 fps, and 4K at the same ceiling. It’s worth noting that you’re not getting 120 fps or 240 fps internally. However, Sony has announced a firmware update planned for 2027 that will add higher frame rate X-OCN recording up to 240 fps and Open Gate XAVC S-I. The body also features electronic shutter only.

As for the build, the 3.5-inch touchscreen mounts on a 4-axis arm with a wide range of tilt positions. The shooting info stays at the edges so it never overlaps the frame, and the “BIG6″ home screen keeps the most-used settings accessible at a glance. The 5-axis IBIS is updated with roughly double the roll correction range of the previous system. The body is magnesium alloy, weighs 750 grams, and has five 1/4”-20 mounting points built in. This means you can attach accessories directly without a cage. Two USB-C ports handle both power delivery and timecode input via an optional adapter. For run-and-gun work, this sounds like a great package.

Two optional accessories launch alongside the camera. The DVF-EL1 is a detachable 0.58-type OLED viewfinder with roughly 7.07 million dots, HDR display, DCI-P3 color, and a tilt mechanism that goes from flat to 90 degrees upward. The XLR-H2 handle unit adds two XLR/TRS combo inputs, four-channel audio, and in-camera recording at up to 96 kHz, 32-bit float. Both connect through the Multi Interface Shoe.
