Nikon has officially announced the ZR 6K – a compact full-frame cinema camera that blends RED’s color science with Nikon’s imaging and stabilization tech. This is Nikon’s first in-house cinema camera since its acquisition of RED, and unlike the previous RED V-RAPTOR [X] and V-RAPTOR XL [X], this one is designed entirely by Nikon: a Nikon body, Nikon Z-mount, and support for Nikon’s N-RAW and Z ecosystem.

While the ZR 6K is not the first camera born of the Nikon–RED collaboration, it does mark the first time we’re seeing RED’s image pipeline and codec integration in a Nikon-native body. It’s also the most affordable RED/Nikon hybrid to date – priced under $2,200.

Built From the Ground Up with RED Color Science

The Nikon ZR 6K captures up to 6K60p video internally in REDCODE RAW (R3D NE), ProRes RAW HQ, and Nikon’s own N-RAW format. In addition to the expected H.264 and H.265 options, it supports full access to RED’s color pipeline: REDWideGamutRGB and Log3G10 curves – features previously limited to RED cameras costing tens of thousands of dollars.

This crossover is made possible by Nikon’s acquisition of RED Digital Cinema, which was finalized earlier in 2024. The first products of that deal were the RED V-RAPTOR [X] ($29,995) and V-RAPTOR XL [X] ($39,995), featuring large-format 8K global shutter sensors and RED’s new “Global Vision” toolset, including Extended Highlights and Phantom Track. These cameras largely followed RED’s existing design language and form factors.

The ZR 6K, however, is a Nikon-designed product – and a sign that RED’s tech is now being folded into Nikon’s hardware ecosystem.

A Cinema Camera in a Mirrorless Form Factor

Despite its compact size – roughly the dimensions of a small mirrorless stills camera – the ZR 6K offers features typically reserved for larger rigs. The camera is built around a 24.5MP full-frame CMOS sensor, supports 5-axis in-body stabilization (rated up to 7.5 stops), and boasts a wide dynamic range exceeding 15 stops.

The body houses a 4-inch articulating touchscreen with 3.07 million dots, DCI-P3 color gamut support, and 1000-nit brightness. The display flips automatically for vertical shooting, which may be useful for social-oriented workflows.

Autofocus is powered by Nikon’s deep learning algorithms and supports subject tracking for people, animals, and vehicles, with detection of up to nine subjects simultaneously.

Audio, Monitoring, and Storage

The ZR 6K supports 32-bit float and 24-bit audio recording, with a standard 3.5mm mic input, headphone monitoring, and built-in mics. It’s compatible with Nikon’s hot shoe mics, such as the ME-D10 and H2315.

Video is recorded to CFexpress Type B cards (via the battery door), while a secondary microSD slot is available for proxy files. A micro-HDMI port provides output for monitoring or external recording. Frame.io integration allows direct camera-to-cloud transfers and live streaming through a connected phone and companion app.

Up to 10 LUTs can be loaded into the camera for on-screen preview, and the dual-base ISO system (800/6400) supports both Log3G10 and N-Log workflows.

Full Support For Z-Mount and Third-Party Glass

The Z-mount on the Nikon ZR 6K gives users access to the full line of NIKKOR Z lenses as well as adapters for third-party optics. The camera’s stabilization system works with both primes and zooms, and lens communication includes full support for autofocus.
