adobe's unfinished film

Adobe is launching a movie, but not a completed one. Adobe’s The Unfinished Film is a concept that’s as innovative as it is risky. Rather than launching a conventional short, Adobe is giving the artistic direction to artists worldwide, which means you and me, too.

This is how it works. Adobe collaborated with AI director and artist Sam Finn to develop a series of “starter plates,” essentially cinematic building blocks. These were then shared with five other filmmakers: Jad Kassis, Phil Cohen, Noémie Pino, Keenan Lam, and Ethan Tran. They all used Adobe Firefly’s generative video capabilities to tell their own version of the story. The outcome? Five immensely varied, extremely personal readings, each constructed from the same foundation.

Sam then edited those versions together into one film that celebrates the various styles and creative visions of each artist. That cut opens on July 31. But here is the surprise: the project does not end there.

That is where The Unfinished Film really begins.

Creativity Without Borders or Rules

On launch day, Adobe invites everyone to download the same starter assets and remix the film as they want. There are no rules to follow. You can remold the tone, style, or story. You can use Firefly’s tools to create new scenes, alter moods or pursue surreal concepts. How you choose what sort of story it is is up to you.

This entire project is more about the process of creating and less about the end product. It reminds us that collaboration, discovery, and experimentation are all part of what makes creating enjoyable in the first place. It also demonstrates how AI tools such as Firefly are not usurping creative work; they are becoming part of the process.

I think that Adobe’s The Unfinished Film is truly refreshing. It does not attempt to dictate to you what creativity is all about. Instead, it gives you the tools and challenges you to demonstrate what creativity can be, in your own language. I hope to see how magnificently varied everyone’s will be. Maybe I will even give it a go myself.
