Lighting the Way: Why We’re Turning Our Ebook Into a Paid Product (And What’s Next for DIY Photography)

Over the past year, more than 30,000 photographers have downloaded our Advanced Lighting ebook. That number blows us away.
What started as a simple guide has become one of the most-requested resources on the site—shared in forums, passed between friends, and bookmarked by photographers looking to level up their lighting skills.
We couldn’t be more grateful.
So if you’re one of those 30,000, thank you. You helped us prove that deep, practical, no-fluff lighting education still matters.
Why We’re Charging Now
We’ve kept the ebook free for a long time because we wanted to make high-quality lighting education accessible. And we still do. But to continue supporting the blog and bring you the kind of content you’ve been asking for—more DIY gear builds, in-depth tutorials, and behind-the-scenes setups—we need to fund that work sustainably.
Turning the Advanced Lighting ebook into a paid product is a step in that direction.
If you already downloaded the book during the free period: enjoy it, keep using it, and know that we’re glad you have it.
If you missed it or want to grab the newest edition (including a print version), here’s where to find it:
- Hard Copy: Buy it here
- Ebook (PDF): Buy it here
What’s Inside (If You Haven’t Seen It Yet)
This isn’t just a lighting 101 pamphlet. It’s a 75+ page, battle-tested guide full of:
- Lighting setups and diagrams
- Gear tips that won’t break the bank
- Step-by-step breakdowns of real shoots
- Tricks for using modifiers, reflectors, and ambient light in creative ways
It’s built for photographers who want more control, more consistency, and more creative options when it comes to light.
What’s Next for the Blog
We’re excited to get back to our DIY roots.
Over the coming months, you’ll see more hands-on content designed to help you build, hack, and create—whether you’re working in a home studio, out in the field, or just tinkering between shoots.
Expect more:
- DIY gear projects and budget builds
- Creative lighting mods
- Studio hacks and storage solutions
- Photography tools you can make yourself
- And plenty of ideas you won’t find anywhere else
We’ve always believed you don’t need the most expensive gear to make great work—just a little ingenuity (and maybe a hot glue gun).
We’re also working on a new series of ebooks—focused on topics you’ve been asking for—and we’ll start rolling those out in the coming weeks.
And keep an eye out: we’ve got a very special product announcement coming soon. It’s something we’ve been building quietly behind the scenes, and we think you’re going to love it.
By supporting the ebook, you’re helping us bring all of this to life. Thank you.

I’m Billy Cristal—a photographer who’s always been curious about the world and the people in it. I like going places without much of a plan and seeing what turns up. When I’m not taking photos, I’m into horse racing, snowboarding, jet skiing, and the occasional round of golf. I’ve got a soft spot for Asian food, marinated meats, and the kind of cheese you have to ask how to pronounce. I believe in good light, good timing, and even better conversations.

About time you got back to DIY photography projects and hacks. There are times I can’t tell the difference between this site and Fstoppers.
