Baseball player smashes a $12,000 lens at 104mph

There are bad days at work, and then there are bad days where you lose $12,000 of equipment. This unlucky sports photographer was in exactly the wrong place at the wrong time when shooting a baseball match when the ball struck his lens, taking out all the glass.
Jim Rassol was covering the match in Florida between the Pittsburgh Pirates and the Miami Marlins. His Sony 400mm f/2.8 lens took the brunt of the 104mph ball, leaving Rassol with little more than a bunch of smashed glass and a rueful expression. And for good reason: these lenses cost around $12,000.
The moment was captured on the TV cameras and then tweeted in full slow motion by Bally Sports, saying it was “an expensive foul ball.”
That was a very expensive foul ball! pic.twitter.com/cj22RFY789
— Bally Sports Florida & Bally Sports Sun (@BallySportsFL) June 24, 2023
Rassol himself commented in a Facebook post that the lens is beyond repair, but he’s happy it wasn’t his head that took the hit, considering the velocity of the ball. “400 2.8 got taken out by a line drive, glass everywhere,” he wrote. “Fortunately, I’m ok. Found out later that the line drive that hit my lens had an exit velocity of 104 miles per hour.”
JC Ruiz Photography was also working during the game and tweeted that he could hear the glass breaking from across the stadium.
I was in the first base photo well and I heard when the ball smashed his 400mm lens. That was how loud it was. https://t.co/KzjjHxGOzJ

It’s absolutely the worst luck imaginable. However, I do hope that Rassol had some decent insurance. It just goes to show how important it is that we insure our gear when out working because that one chance in a million does happen. Lightning (or baseballs) really can strike at any time.
Update: Joseph Cavaretta started a GoFundMe campaign for Jim to fix his lens. Sony tells DIYP that they discounted the repair to the amount raised by the GoFundMe.

In before all the “should’ve used a UV filter for protection” comments :)
I’m guessing it’s insured.
Stewart Norton hopefully… You would be surprised how many pro photographers don’t have the right level of or appropriate insurance…
Stewart Norton it was confirmed not to be insured and as with everything else in life there is now a gofundme for him.
That’s what insurance is for.
Don Barnard you know for sure he has to have insurance with them risks
Misael Nevarez article says he doesn’t
Gabe Hintz so sad
Misael Nevarez surprised he doesn’t if lens is that much and he does it for work..
Gabe Hintz where did you read that? I read in the article “However, I do hope that Rassol had some decent insurance.” but I didn’t see anything in the article saying he didn’t have insurance.

Kurt Bimler there was an update that was posted saying he doesn’t have insurance.
Gabe Hintz thanks. I didn’t see the update. It was below a block of ads on my phone and I must not have scrolled down far enough.
Kurt Bimler no problem!
Gabe Hintz no empathy for the guy.
Just like condoms are cheaper than child support..
Insurance is valuable protection that you’re not gonna miss until you need it..
If you can afford a $12,000 lens and you’re gonna take it into an environment where bad things can happen.. why the hell would you pay for a little insurance?
Don Barnard oh I have no sympathy for this guy either lol.
I assume the lens can be replaced without paying the entire cost of the camera 🤔
It says the lens is $12k but that sounds rather insane, right? Lol
Allison Breckey not a cheap lens
Media: https://www.facebook.com/photo.php?fbid=821104609371517&set=p.821104609371517&type=3
Allison Breckey you haven’t been looking at the prices on pro lenses at all have you?
Allison Breckey sounds insane for the lens to be $12,000 but that is the actual cost of just the lens. Here’s a snapshot off B&H with his lens at the top.
Media: https://www.facebook.com/photo.php?fbid=10224155943792142&set=p.10224155943792142&type=3
Kevin Creaghan Louisia LeCompte Holy 🐮‼️😳
Don Barnard not until now, WOW. He should definitely get insurance haha
Allison Breckey lenses are usually more expensive than the cameras.
Allison Breckey the lens: 400 2.8 in new condition is $11,998 if buying from a store. He likely receives a slight % discount via Sony Professional services like every pro photographer like him, and it is very easy and cheap to have minimal insurance of at least 10k coverage. I’d need his explanation for not having any sort of coverage.
Repair Will be probably around 1k… no worries
That is why you need a UV filter 😜
Chung Dha Lam No..that’s why you have a $500 hood..the hood wasn’t even on..in reverse.
Chung Dha Lam that’s why you need an insurance ;)
Chung Dha Lam at 104mph I doubt a UV filter or a hood would help.
Chung Dha Lam that size? 😂😂😂n
May Lawrence hood might help to reflect the ball, given at what angle the ball hit.
Literally pre-empted the obvious joke before anybody had the chance to comment ;)
Marin Ćuk Vurnek that’s a direct hit guys
Chung Dha Lam the best 50 Dollar invest a photographer can make 😎
Chung Dha Lam no, insurance!
Chung Dha Lam That’s why you are so idiot
Chung, there I sent even the threads, nor do they sell filters in the diameter for that lens.
Victor Chan $500? Far more.
Marin Ćuk Vurnek it could but it could also hit the hood which flips the whole damn camera from his hand. Think he is lucky it’s just the lens.
May Lawrence 12 000 dollar lens though, does not sound very lucky – in my country, that is a whole year’s wage lol
Chung Dha Lam that photographer would prolly punch someone in the face for saying that lol
Marin Ćuk Vurnek if it was his head, he would be dead. Everything is relative :)
May Lawrence people survive gunshots to head, so not necessarily lol. still blows my mind why not have lens hood on on such lens.
Marin Ćuk Vurnek the size difference between a bullet and a baseball…
May Lawrence bigger objects usually bounce. smaller like bullet pierce ;)
The face says it all, hope he has good insurance.
Daniel Shanley nope
Least it was his lens and not his face 🙃
David Cooper at 12k, of I didn’t have gear insurance, I’ll heal!
Same here especially if I couldn’t afford a new lens
I would imagine he has insurance…
Kevin Yount nope
John Nicholson How do you know he didnt? I cant find any statements from him saying it wasnt
It was a rental from canon, thus why he is like.. this is why I rent and pay insurance.. lol
Nick Edges Sony, and his own lens
Glad it was this head. Did he get a good shot??
Matt Nicki Lautemann yeah no kidding, that was too close too his head for comfort! & I’m curious if there was a picture right before the hit too😂
Oh wow bet he is sick but should have insurance on it
https://imgur.com/a/VzgKD97
Danielle Cundiff 😳😢
Danielle Cundiff I know!
If it gets enough publicity maybe Sony gives him a decent discount…
Thats way we have to buy insurance!
That is why he has insurance
He doesn’t, though, apparently :)
Candy Whitmarsh except he didn’t.
John Nicholson his loss then. My daughter is a photographer and has lens and camera insured.
Candy Whitmarsh I too own thousands of dollars of photography equipment well in excessof that lens. I am safeguarded on theft from vehicles but incidents like this, not so much. The reality is I’ve already outlasted the premiums if I had them for all those years.
John Nicholson a photographer over 37 years here and couldn’t imagine shooting in the sports field without proper insurance…. Those lenses are insanely expensive!
I saw this posted on another photography page: https://www.gofundme.com/f/jim-rassol
Davin Milun i clicked, it says it’s been closed now (no more donations) as Sony has agreed to repair the lens for $7500 (which is how much the GoFundMe has already collected).
It’s either insured or a company owns it, and it will also be insured.
No one just owns those lenses without protection.
Gregory Vanwaldron apparently he does as it’s been confirmed it is his personal lens and he could not afford insurance
Kevin Roland he can afford a $12,000 lens and can’t afford insurance…? I mean I’ve heard dumber things, but not many.
Gregory Vanwaldron I have one similar but no insurance, because of the insane cost of the insurance & clauses, it possibly won’t be paid out anyway. 16yrs I’ve owned it, Same reason I’d never leave it in a car by itself,. & No he didn’t have insurance but crazy to be shooting were you could get hit!
Gregory Vanwaldron I personally wouldn’t have done it as I have insurance on everything but it’s not as simple as he can afford a lens and not the insurance. Everyone has a different situation.
Gregory Vanwaldron u think i seen 2 sony 400 mm f2.8 lens at knockhill superbike with spectators taking pics at the hairpin 2 weeks ago 😳
Eos Man wasn’t he in a designated space for photographers, shoulder to shoulder with other photographers? That’s what at least one account I read specified as the reason why he didn’t have a lens hood installed, that the hood would interfere with other photographers…
Gary Eyerly that’s correct. We often remove them to be polite for others shooting different angles. Hood may or may not have helped him.
Hope he has insurance
Terence Ng nope
Terence Ng insurance doesn’t cover this
Michael Terndrup some insurance doesn’t cover it. It’s all about how the policy is written and how much it is.
He couldn’t understand why the ball seemed to be getting bigger. Then it hit him.
Randy Williams awesome response made me laugh 😂
John Peterson I’ll take all the laughs I can get out of life. 😁👌
I’d say it was foul all right
I’d be shocked if he didn’t have it ensured.
Simon M. Arnet no insurance
Bbbummer
He has insurance relax…😂
Jacob Scurry He doesn’t. He started a GoFundMe lmao.
Josh Godin that’s called game. You think a pro shooter ain’t got insurance? Anything over $500 should be insured 😂😂😂
Jacob Scurry he didn’t have insurance he’s a freelancer just managing
Jacob Scurry He didn’t have insurance. That’s not game. That’s stupid. Now he wants everyone else to pay for his stupidity.
You can think he has game or whatever… But that’s just you getting gamed on lol
Kevin Creaghan insurance is a few hundred a year. It’s a no brainier when kit costs as much as it does.
Josh Godin he might be double dipping. I know some “influencers” who had medical emergencies and asked their fans to donate to their Gofundme to cover their hospital bill. But these same influencer friends also have medical insurance so that is paying their medical expense and the Gofundme money is going straight to their pockets.
We live in Scamming era 😂😂 it’s game
Josh Godin so do meth heads bro… catch up! It’s 2023😂😂
Kevin Creaghan I’m a freelancer.
1 million public liability cover and up to £50’000 equipment cover is £300 a year.
What is he doing going ANYWHERE professionally without insurance?
Jacob Scurry Don’t drag me to your level lol. Scamming is happening across entire tax brackets. You’re down here inventing scams for a lens.
Josh Godin live in Oakland I see scamming all the time. It just the world we live in now. I’m not buying it, he didn’t have insurance for that lens. That’s hilarious to me.
James Street exactly!
James Street no, it’s lot a few hundred dollars per year for professional sports shooters. Insurance costs are very different for pros vs amateurs. Companies like State Farm won’t even touch sports shooters. I’ve been with Allianz or Chub for 32 years.
And if he makes a claim, expect a 10-20% jump for 3-7 years.
I love how the contention here is “yes. he played the odds to avoid excessive insurance payment for nothing… and played them badly so now he needs help if he aims to both keep his business going and feed himself.” Yes, we’re dealing with a mastermind scammer alright.
Jacob Scurry at that ridiculous price I would have several policies. Or just not buy a 12000 lens that I doubt is doing any better than the cheap version
Jacob Scurry actually, he doesn’t
Michael Stahlschmidt must be specific to sports then. I am a professional videographer and pay about $500/year for all my kit.
Had to make a claim two weeks in too, only saw an incremental increase the following year.
Or maybe it it’s just an American insurance policy.
James Street policies are different by country.
It looks ok. I mean nothing a little glue couldn’t put right.
I thought that’s how many lenses he went through at first 😆
Was the AF able to keep up?
But did he get the shot?
Sell it on ebay lol, someone will buy it
Most likely it is owned by the entity he works for. Just grab another one off the shelf and keep on shooting.
Janne Pappila Nope he’s freelance with no insurance. But hey we’ll just start a gofundme and let everyone else pay for it 😞
Chris Stone Well that sucks if so. But how can ANYONE not have insurance for something with that price tag…
😬
F
Should have had that hood on
That’s what I was thinking
Andrew Graham likely wouldn’t have helped
Andrew Graham apparently, as a courtesy to fellow photographers, so as not to block their shots and also because it makes the camera slower to quickly swing around, nobody uses a lens hood in the pit
He looks like he’s ready to take a submersible trip to see the titanic.

It just took a split second for a sports photographer to become a baller
he got instant replacement, esp for wired agency. shit happens.. just
Nelson Teo Freelancing
Kevin Creaghan hope he got insurance covered
Nelson Teo nope
Kevin Creaghan good luck…
Hope he had insurance!
Ann Westerman no
It’s crazy not to have insurance if you depend on this lens for your income! At a lot of events over here (uk) you also have to have £5million public liability so insurance is a given
Peter Tarry not all. Some. Mostly auto racing. I worked the London Olympics, no liability insurance required.
Michael Stahlschmidt yep I covered 2012 to and it wasn’t asked for but all motorsports ( even something as tame as the goodwood festival of speed)and a lot of pr jobs now require it along with risk assessment planning which does seem a smidge over the top when covering a charity football tournament
David Hope
Michael Zimmermann wanna hope insurance covers that
There is a protective piece of glass in front of the actual lens!
Allan Caporuscio No there isn’t. No lens manufacturer puts a cover over a well engineered front element.
Jason Tay I’ve owned both a 600 F4 and a 400 f2.8, I’m extremely familiar with the lenses!
Allan Caporuscio it seems break several lens elements
This is what happened when you didn’t keep your eye on the ball for even a split second….
Vince Khoo it only takes a split second from bat and ball to ball and lens
Terry Myers haha. Don’t mind me. I was just trying to be punny but failed miserably.
Vince Khoo hey, it’s still early. I get ya 😃
Terry Myers thanks for the support hahaha.
Thank’s to that kind of media fame, Canon will probably give him a new one for free :)
Andy Banachowicz If I’m the marketing guy, this is the best time to promote the brand. Surely you won’t just give and go. You will put some clauses in the gift such as Canon invites him to another game, and ask him to take some photos with the new lens and share it with the world.
Marketing Marketing.
Andy Banachowicz he won’t be happy as it’s a Sony camera!
Barry Kwan Sony camera 😉
I guess he couldn’t “think fast”.
He started a GoFundMe as a fun little way to let us all know he doesn’t know what insurance does.
Josh Godin , deductibles.
What insurance does is it profits off of premiums being higher than payouts. Whether insurance is worth it or not depends on a lot of things. He’d likely have to carry $15K single item coverage with maybe a $75K total coverage, That will be around $500/month. He can replace that lens for $9500 right now, and probably cheaper if he hunts a bit or can find a beat up with with good glass. So with 19 months of premium payments, he could replace the lens. How often does this stuff happen? What are the chances all $75K of equipment is actually at risk at any given time(when you have to pay monthly for insuring all of it).
Surely it makes sense for some, but not for all. Some photogs would probably look at this as an opportunity to refresh, or maybe sell the sony stuff and try Canon R for a few years. Those would likely be hobbyist funding levels though, not pro funding levels…
I would too
What a bummer! At least he got the ball…
well, good it wasn’t his head instead;
probably has insurance on the lens, would be silly he hadn’t.
Sebastian Kunst Paul no insurance, too expensive
Sounds like an occupational hazard
Kelly Larson , sidelines at a football game are much more dangerous. A thousand pounds of muscle and momentum taking a play out of bounds. If you don’t have a retreat alley you are a nube and asking for it. Especially if you are wearing the opposing teams colors.
Some sports photographer. 😉 Didn’t even see it coming.
Lewis Woodyard 104 mph!
Yeah, but did he get the shot?…
David Richards well, he got the shot ;)
Sell it online
Alex Josh
Christian Castle seen it. I hope he had insurance on his gear.
Don’t cry for people that can afford lenses like this. They have insurances and they are paid very well so they can easily replace them.
It’s insured
If he didn’t have insurance that’s his bad.
Okay, but did he get the shot first? 🤣
That’ll just buff right out…
Part of the job 🤷♂️
Now he’s gotta take two $6,000 lenses and tape them together.
Better the camera lens than his head, eye, etc.
Barbara Armstrong I would lose my head knowing I lost a lens that cost two eyes and an arm
There is something called insurance 🤦 what’s the big deal
It’s a great story that others are interested in. I don’t understand why you need to be a dick about it.
Awwww…. So that is why you shoot through a hole at a hockey game! I think I would rather pay my huge medical insurance deductible than have my baby get smashed like that.
Christopher Lord, as a photographer ill say if you can afford a $12K lens you can afford great health insurance. Paying his health premium is a half to one day’s pay, depending on the gig.
Looks like klopp
Hope he has insurance
Now go photograph something worthwhile.
that hurts to see :O
Yeah he might have had insurance. But did he have a back up lens to catch the rest of the game? Insurance doesn’t replace it immediately, you have to make a claim and wait.
Someone like that would absolutely have insurance. If he doesn’t, then he deserves it 100%!
Thats why we are insured!
Jason MacDonald except he isn’t
Sean Murphy
I’m sad for what happened and it was no way his fault, but he’s been very naive here.
I would just make an insurance claim and that’s it. That’s why you have equipment insurance. Sure it sucks.
Ouch. Glad it wasn’t me
It was most likely insured.
If by small chance he didn’t insure his expensive and highly fragile lens then he just learned a costly lesson lol.
Hopefully the lens was insured
Steve Wells it wasn’t
Hole in one!
BUT he got the ball as a consolation prize!!
Probably a company owned lens
But did he get the picture?
I hope he isn’t expecting anyone to reimburse him. Just an unexpected part of the job. No one is to blame.
Glenn Charbonneau You can rest assured that he absolutely expects the insurance company to reimburse him 100% of the value of the lens; that’s why you pay for insurance.
Chris McCown he didn’t have insurance. He raised around $7k on GoFundMe and Sony reached out and offered to replace it for that amount so he closed the campaign.
Lots of ppl saying he didnt have insurance. I cant find that anywhere. I can see he bought his own gear, that doesnt mean he didnt insure it.
Takes into B&H.
“Now this was like this when I opened the box…”
Why is Jurgen kloop there?;p
Its definitely insured if that is his profession
Reilly Smith it’s not insured. There is a go fund me set up for him
Reilly Smith you be surprised how hard it is to get camera equipment insured
Insurance
Why tf the lens 12000 bitch shit have bullet proof glass lmao
Business expense. And if he’s dumb enough to have a $12K lens without insurance, then he almost deserves to have it get smashed.
Smart pros buy insurance. Doesn’t pay to cut corners.
Michael Stahlschmidt
Arin Ahnell unlucky. I’ve been there. Had a 300/2.8 destroyed at a soccer match in Portland, and a 500/4 at one in Portugal. Otherwise mostly water or drop damage over the years.
Sure a lot of inaccuracy in the comments.
Insurance. New lens day!!!
Aaron Palaian lol maybe read the article, the guy has no insurance
Sean Murphy why would I read it? Who cares. The guy shoots sports, shit happens. No insurance = stupid, unless you have the money and don’t care risking it then more power to you. Pointless article, clickbait garbage. Commenting is fun though 😆
Aaron Palaian “why would I read it?”
I don’t know, maybe to educate yourself on the facts before making assumptions that translate into stupid comments?
Sean Murphy side note, I just read it. Nothing in there said he didn’t have insurance. Nothing. Just that it was an expensive foul ball, which it was because it ruined a lens. Also said that they hope he does have insurance but never said he didn’t.
Sean Murphy jackass show me where it says it. I just read the entire thing and doesn’t say he didn’t have insurance
Aaron Palaian oh, I didn’t read it. But I did read four other articles that included the part where he’s not insured, including the original article this post was quoted from.
Lazy journalism there
Sean Murphy again, jackass, we are talking about this not four other articles that aren’t shown here. Wow you care a hell of a lot to read 4 articles on this stupid shit. Might try shooting more instead. Have a great night!
Sean Murphy
You: “lol maybe read the article”
Also you: “oh, I didn’t read it.”
Who made the stupid comments now? 🙄
Sean Murphy 🤣 ☠️
Cost of lost lens : £12,000 . Benefits from reporting about it and getting royalties, sponsors, sympathy, attention, laughs, compassion, headline news, interviews, followers, friends, subscribers, interviews, etc. etc. : Priceless.
I mean…that’s why you have insurance. No big deal
The number of people who are too lazy or stupid to read past the headline yet go on and one about insurance really is appalling.
The guy has no insurance. The lens is not covered. He is now out $12,000. Maybe spent a few minutes reading the fucking article.
Thank god it was a canon lens and not Nikon:) lol
He should have moved if the ball was coming right at him…
Joseph Masek yeah, it’s easy to move out of the way of a ball traveling over 100 mph –
Kathy Niven Leister LOL you see it coming… Most people would move or try to catch it, not use an expensive camera as protection
Now he knows, how a female pornstar feels…
Andreas Jockisch-Tessendorf ?
Kathy Niven Leister can’t write it on facebook. Thing of a bj and “she saw comming”
Andreas Jockisch-Tessendorf I’m actually thinking of how inappropriate your comment is –
Kathy Niven Leister maybe, who cares? Read something else.
Andreas Jockisch-Tessendorf bless your heart
Kathy Niven Leister bless you too. 👍
Did he get the shot 🤔😂😂😂
Daniel Roedor en la mju de 5k
Sony? No harm doen then…
Tina McGuire
Do people that shoot use their own gear or are they provided to them by the publications they shoot for? Genuinely asking….
Freelance shooters use their own gear. I had my Canon R6 and 70-200mm lens fall out of my camera bag last month when I was on the back of a moto. It yeeted across the road and both were utterly destroyed. My fault entirely and my first loss in 10 years..
thats what insurance is for tho
He has now the better picture ever!
Good it was a camera lens not his head. Thanks God. 🥰
Who cares
Sony? No harm doen then…
Once, Wawrinka hit me in the eye serving, promise, at the tunnel of RGarros

Most professional sports photographers don’t own lenses like this. Too expensive. Rather, the media/press organizations buy these lenses and sign the out to photographers under contract to cover the events.
Peor si lo dejaba tuerto.

I have a rider on my insurance policy for all my lenses. Stolen, dropped, broken, doesn’t matter if it’s my fault or not. They replace at full value. He likely had something like that.
