Instructable user fpound of kontent films needed to take a really long time lapse. How long? 4 months – to show water changing over a season. While any battery will last for a night time lapse, running for four months is not only battery heavy, but it calls for camera protection against the elements.

Here is a video that shows the power of taking a timelapse over an entire season.
Setting up a camera to such a long duration requires quite a bit of preparation, but pfound made a point of documenting those preparations providing very clear and easy to follow instructions.
The process involves several steps:
Securing the camera with a Pelican case. The case provides a housing for the camera, battery and intervalometer.
The case is fitted with a pipe for the lens and a clear UV filter, making it practically a weather sealed tank proof home for a camera.

Power is coming from a 12 volt car battery running through a power converted and a faux battery.

Finally an intervalometer is hooked up and set to the desired interval.

Last but not least, you definitely don’t want anyone calling the cops after seeing a weird box making clicking sounds. so clearly explaining what you are doing is a good idea:

Can someone please explain why did he use 12 volt car battery running through a power converted and a faux battery.?
Isn’t the car battery and the power converter enough?

The camera doesn’t have an external power jack so he had to input the external power through the camera’s internal battery terminals. The faux battery pack is the easiest way to make a removable (non-permanent) connection between the external source and the battery terminals.

Is there any detailed DIY to connect a car battery to a DSLR ?
I’m not aware of any specific DIY instructions but all this guy did was take universal car adapter and put the appropriate connectors on both ends. The one he used looks like an AH765R. Google it, they’re about $15.

Looks like he also added an inline fuse for good measure. Can’t say how big but probably a fairly small one.

What did you do for the intervalometer power? Did the batteries last the entire time?
