While she was taking photos at Hocking Hills State Park, Ohio-based photographer Victoria Schafer was struck by a falling branch of a tree. Unfortunately, she was killed in the incident, and the authorities suspect foul play. They are now offering a $10,000 reward to anyone who provides information that will lead to the arrest and conviction of suspects.

Southern Ohio Crime Stoppers has shared the official ODNR (Ohio Department of Natural Resources) press release. It states that Victoria Schafer of Chillicothe was taking photos near Old Man’s Cave at Hocking Hills State Park on 2 September around 5:30 p.m. According to FOX8, the 44-year-old photographer was taking senior pictures of six high school students. A part of a tree fell on her, and she was later pronounced dead at the scene.

The press release reads that “at this point in the investigation, officers have reason to believe the falling section of the tree was not a natural occurrence.” Therefore, they are asking the public’s help. ODNR Director Mary Mertz said:

“We want every visitor to our state parks to have a safe and enjoyable experience. Our investigation is ongoing so that we gain a clear understanding of the events that led to the tragic death of Mrs. Schafer. We appreciate everyone who has reached out with information about what they saw on September 2, but we still need the public’s help.”

Captain Schaad Johnson of ODNR told FOX8 that the branch is believed not to fall by natural means. “We do have evidence to support that individuals, and we have descriptions of them, were on the top section above where this incident happened and dislodged this section of tree,” he said.

Southern Ohio Crime Stoppers is offering a $10,000 reward for any information leading to the arrest and conviction of the person or persons involved in Victoria Schafer’s death. If you have any information, you can reach out to them via phone numbers 740-773-TIPS (773-8477) or 800-222-8477, online, or via Facebook. You can also give tips to ODNR by calling 614-799-9538. All tips are anonymous.

There’s a lot of the story missing here…..there has to be. I’ve done quite a bit of photography in my life, and normally the subjects are close to/under a tree, NOT the photog. Plus, if she was under a tree, wouldn’t she hear or see someone above her?

I’ve been there many times and the entire area is a massive gorge miles long. Not really a spot for photographing someone in the shade under a tree, more likely photographing someone with at the massive ledges, waterfalls or in the background. In terms of hearing someone above her, these cliffs are very tall at points, some of them more of an overhang.

My guess is that some idiots were on the cliffs above and pushed or broke a fallen branch off the top that’s how it killed her. I’m really surprised someone would be that stupid to do it on a busy day like Labor Day, there is no way only the photog/clients were the only ones around below. The area below the cliffs are hiking trails anyways. Plus the Old Mans Cave area of the gorge is the most popular section of the park, I’ve had to wait in a line to get up the stairs to get out.

Leave it to the guy with a Confederate flag in their profile pic to come up with the conspiracy theory.
