Fully Working 4×5 Camera Made Of LEGO Bricks

Fully Working 4×5 Camera Made Of LEGO BricksThey say that if you set a 1,000,000 monkeys at 1,000,000 typewriters for 1,000,000 years and let them type randomly at the machines, one of those monkeys will end up accidentally writing the complete works of William Shakespeare.

Similarly, I wonder, if we sat down 1,000,000 monkeys with a ton of LEGO bricks, will they end up building a fully functional camera.

Well, photographer Cary Norton took the monkey part out of the equation and proved that a fully functional camera can indeed be built from heap loads of LEGO bricks

The camera, named Legotron,  uses a 4x5 film back and took over a year (with lapses) to build. Images are quite impressive.

Its equipped with a $40 127mm ƒ4.7 "ebay lens", and can focus by sliding the two boxes that make the camera back and forward.

It would be rad if LEGO actually start selling those or 35mm cameras as kits

LEGO cameras requested

Just wrote my brother who's a big shot at LEGO head offices here in Denmark (where the magic originates, mind you) and asked for release date on such a camera. I'll be sure to follow up on it!

Hi Rasmus,

This is awsome! Looking forward to see any further development.

As Joel suggested, I think a 35 pinhole or other fixed small lens would probably beva more popular choice than a 4x5.

I'd love to see some further

I'd love to see some further development as well, but sad to say I don't think it'll ever happen, though. Will nag him for it, though :)

Japanese LEGO camera

The entire front panel of the Optio NB1000 is covered in tiny, Lego-like studs, which are compatible with a competing block system from Japan’s Kawada Co. Ltd. Dubbed “Nanoblocks”, these tiny construction blocks can be attached to the front of the Pentax NB1000 in pretty much any pattern, making it one of the most visually customizable cameras we’ve ever seen.

Don't see what the big deal

Don't see what the big deal is, it's a box made of lego with camera lens stuck on one end, and it took a year to build?

I'm amazed at the quality of the photo - that's some sterling workmanship!

(Re: anonymous above

You've clearly never used a 5x4 camera... Good luck getting from concept to product in a year, and constructing a functional camera that gives you beautiful, focused pictures like that...)

TOTALLY love this! I would

TOTALLY love this! I would buy one if it were produced for people to purchase! Legos and photography, large format specifically, are my passions!

And people think Lego is just for kids! I've seen milling machines and VW Camper vans made from Lego and that's just in the past week. The Legotron is very inspiring and should be shown to kids to encourage their little minds and hands into action!

Lego Pinhole Camera

Just found out it´s not that easy to make a working LEGO Pinhole camera. I´ve described the process and the results of my first tests here: http://abiteof.com.

See lego isn't just for kids!

See lego isn't just for kids! This really suprised me actually, but i have to say i agree with one of the comments above, how on earth did it take a full year to build?

Awesome!
