Water splashes often seem to go hand in hand with product photography, although it’s not always easy to capture. Often it requires several pairs of hands to man the camera while simultaneously throwing water at your subject. But it’s possible to shoot it on your own quite easily using a DIY catapult, built from mostly standard gear you already have in your studio.

You’ll need a few bits of wood, screws, a bungee cord and a length of rope as well, but as this video from Matt Huber demonstrates, it’s a really simple design that’s easy to build. But the results it allows you to produce are very effective.

I’ve been following Aurum Light’s “milk dress” photography for a few years now. It’s an amazing technique that’s been imitated a bunch, but nobody else really seems to make it stand out in the way photographer Jaroslav Wieczorkiewicz and his team do. And he’s able to do it consistently, too, regularly pumping out new work and it always has that same impact.

This time, though, I think he’s really outdone himself, with the “Villains Edition” of his Splash Heroes calendar for 2020.

Photographer Jaroslav Wieczorkiewicz has shared his splendid work with us before. His signature technique is high-speed photography of models “dressed” in milk splashes. After Milky Pin-Ups, Splash Heroes and Fallen Angels, Jaroslav has created another stunning series for 2018 calendar and he shared the work with DIYP. This time, he blends pin-up style with the inspiration from popular movies.

In his latest series, you can see Morticia Addams, Jessica Rabbit, Mia Wallace from Pulp Fiction, to name just a few. All of the models bring together pin-up style, movie references, and of course – lots of colorful milk splashes.

Liquids are a great source of photographic fun. It’s a topic which fascinates many photographers. There’s so much to experiment and play with. Splashes are particularly intriguing to me a a photographer, because you never really know exactly what you’re going to get. You might fire of 50 or 100 shots before you get the one you want.

That’s where this video from photographer Dustin Dolby steps in to save you a little frustration. With minimal kit, and a little compositing, you can often create fantastic end results much more quickly.

Photographing splashing liquids is great fun. There’s all kinds of things you can do with it. Moving the lighting around, using coloured gels, or swapping over to a completely different liquid altogether. Often, though, the simplest place to start is with one of the most abundant substances on the planet, and that’s water.

That’s the liquid which Russia based commercial photographer Andrew Mikhaylov uses in this video. Andrew goes through the whole process of shooting and post processing water splashes. I will warn you, you might want to have a bunch of towels handy if you’re going to try this yourself. As you would expect, things get a little wet and messy.

Valentine was yesterday and we thought we will give you some post-holiday roses. Of course those are “photography roses” made with high speed photography by Alex Koloskov and his team at Photigy.

We were wondering how those images came to be and had a chat with Alex.

Alex tells DIYP that there are two main secrets to getting the splashes right: 1) very short flash duration (They were using top notch Broncolors strobes) and 2) shaping the splashes by hand.

I’m sure most of you are familiar with Jaroslav Wieczorkiewicz’s work by now. His signature splashed-milk photography has been featured twice before on the blog as well as on numerous media outlets across the world.

But, as much as I liked his 1940’s Milky Pin-ups and loved his Splash Heroes, they both suddenly seem like they were just a test run in preparation for his latest series.

Coming from a personal place with this one, and with plenty of experience, Jaroslav seems to have outdone himself as these incredible photos show.

We were also lucky enough to get awesome behind-the-scenes shots, giving us a glimpse into how these photos were created.
