There’s been a lot of rumours and speculation over the past few months since Panasonic unveiled their alliance with Leica and Sigma at Photokina and briefly introduced us to their two new full-frame mirrorless cameras; the Panasonic Lumix S1 and S1R. Now, they’re finally here. Well, at least to pre-order. But here’s all the info, specs and capabilities.
UK retailers jump the gun on the Panasonic S1 and S1R mirrorless cameras
by 7 CommentsWell, it’s (almost) official. The launch of the Panasonic S1 and S1R full-frame mirrorless cameras was expected in March, presumably, so they could tease them at The Photography Show, and then show them off properly at Photokina. Since Photokina was cancelled, however, Panasonic let out a new teaser letting us know to expect an announcement on January 31st (today).
It looks like UK retailers Park Cameras and CVP might have jumped the gun slightly, though, because, for a brief time, they listed the new cameras and various lens combos on their websites for pre-order, along with prices. Well, Park had prices, CVP didn’t.

Panasonic Lumix S1 and S1R coming in March and they have two new features
by Leave a CommentPanasonic’s announcement from CES today talks about the upcoming Lumix S1 and S1R cameras announced at Photokina. On initial announcement, not a lot of information was released. We know that the S1 will house a 24-megapixel full frame sensor, and the S1R will be 47-megapixels. We also know that they would both utilise Leica’s L mount.
But beyond that, there’s still not a lot out there. But now Panasonic has released information two of the features that will be coming to the Lumix S series cameras. High Resolution Mode and “HLG Photo” (High Dynamic Range). Oh, and we also have a release date.

Yes, sensor size matters, but not as much as you think
by 6 CommentsShould you switch from APS-C to full-frame? Or perhaps shoot large format? Does it matter? What will it change? Ah, so many questions. In this video, Jay P. Morgan and Kenneth Meryl have decided to test four sensor sizes side by side and give you the answers. They shot with a large format, a full-frame, an APS-C and a micro 4/3 camera. Here you can compare the images side-by-side and see for yourself how much of a difference there is.

It’s an entirely new generation of Foveon sensor. Well, we did know they were working on one. Now we know what it was for!
They’ve also announced Sigma SA, Sigma EF (which includes Canon’s, too), Leica M and Leica PL mount to L mount adapters. This means that right off the bat, the new Panasonic, Sigma and Leica L mount cameras will have access to a huge amount of existing lenses.

Leica press release leaks early – confirms collaboration with Panasonic and Sigma
by 2 CommentsThe complete Leica press release confirming the “strategic cooperation” between Leica, Panasonic and Sigma has leaked ahead of today’s official announcement. The (Google translated) press release (original in German here) doesn’t say what cameras or lenses might be announced, just that the three companies are working together to release full frame & APS-C cameras and lenses using the Leica L mount.
A quote from Sigma CEO, Kazuto Yamaki, does confirm, though, that Sigma is planning to release cameras based on the Leica L mount and not just lenses. So we may yet see that full frame Foveon.
