Quick tips for taking amazing holiday family portraits

During the holiday season, I’m sure all of us want to get some festive family shots with our loved ones. But how to make the best out of them? In this video from B&H, photographer David Flores shares some quick tips to take your holiday family photos to a new level.

1. Set the scene

Evergreen trees, Christmas lights, warm colors… No matter whether you shoot at home, in the backyard or in a park, think about the setting and make it reflect the holiday mood. Also, choose a place that means something to you and your family. This way you’ll create a sense of familiarity and make the photos more personal, too.

2. Keep it simple

If you’re anything like me, you get hyped over holiday photos and you may have the urge to overdo them. But don’t! Things like matching outfits, tons of props and other details can take away from the portraits. Plus, you can get stressed over planning and setting everything up instead of just enjoying the process. Which takes us to the next tip.

3. Embrace candid moments

Sure, it’s important to plan some of your shots and shoot well-composed family portraits. But, you should also relax and capture those “real” moments that make you and your family who you are.

4. Black and white

“Never underestimate the power of black and white,” as David puts it. Black and white photos have timeless quality. Plus, they fit well with any color scheme, which will make your job easier if you’re making holiday cards.

5. Choose the best time of day

Are you and your family night owls or morning people? Or perhaps you all gather around for lunch? Plan the shoot based on the time of day that suits best to all of you.

6. Have fun

Finally, plan your shoot around an occasion that’s enjoyable for you and your loved ones. Relax, have fun, and make the photo shoot casual and fun for everyone.

Are there any tips you’d like to share for taking holiday family photos?
