Meta considers minting and selling NFTs on Facebook and Instagram

The Social Media company Meta is apparently exploring the possibility of enabling users to make, showcase and sell NFTs from Facebook and Instagram in the near future. If this goes ahead, this would be possibly the first mainstream endorsement of NFTs.

According to a Financial Times report, the plans are “at an early stage and could yet change.” Teams at both Facebook and Instagram are “readying” themselves to implement the new feature that will let users mint new NFTs as well as display them as their profile image.

Other plans include launching a marketplace to buy and sell NFTs as well. As yet, it is unclear how, when or if this will launch. Instagram CEO Adam Mosseri said in December that the company is “actively exploring NFTs and how we can make them more accessible to a wider audience,” and going back to October Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg spoke about how the metaverse will need to support “ownership of digital goods or NFTs.”

It all makes some sort of sense if Zuckerberg’s vision of a virtual Metaverse comes to pass. The embracing of NFTs by such a huge company will only ensure their value and placement in the future.
