Irix has announced two new lenses. Sort of. The lenses are new versions of their popular Irix 15mm f/2.4 (buy here) and 150mm f/2.8 Macro (buy here) lenses for Sony E mount mirrorless cameras. No longer do you need to deal with DSLR mount converters.

The company says that the new Irix 15mm f/2.4 and 150mm f/2.8 Macro lenses for Sony E mount are complete redesigns. The two lenses feature Irix’s Dragonfly finish, which means they’re made from magnesium alloy and high-quality composite materials. They’re also very durable and weather resistant.

Irix 15mm f/2.4 for Sony E mount

Even if we set the outward build differences aside for a moment, the Irix 15mm f/2.4 for Sony E mount features a distinct advantage over its adapted DSLR counterparts. Contacts on the lens mount provide full communication with the camera. This allows the camera and lens to talk with each other for semi-automatic exposure modes. It’s still a manual focus lens, but the camera doesn’t need to guess at things like aperture and focus distance.

It also means that this data is stored in the EXIF data. This is data created by your camera and embedded into the image each time you fire the shutter. The iris operation can be controlled using the camera or manually via a ring on the lens. A switch allows you to “declick” it, letting you swap between standard and stepless aperture modes depending on whether you’re shooting photos or video.

Irix 150mm f/2.8 Macro for Sony E mount

Like the 15mm f/2.4 above, the Irix 150mm f/2.8 Macro for Sony E mount also provides communication with the camera. This allows for aperture control as well as communication for things like TTL flash power and storing EXIF data in the images. It’s also a manual focus lens boasting no distortion and true 1:1 macro reproduction.

It uses standard 77mm filters, offering wide compatibility with many filters, holder systems and matte boxes on the market. It’s also a Dragonfly finish lens, providing high durability and weather resistance for shooting macro out on location.
