After Google Pixel’s score of 89 and taking the first place on DxO Mark Mobile, there’s now a new king. HTC’s newly announced U11 takes over the throne and scores 90, thus becoming the highest-rated phone on DxOMark Mobile so far. This phone has a range of well-performing features, but at DxO, they particularly emphasize its low noise and fast autofocus. As they point out, these two features were the key to achieving the highest score and taking over the first place. But for the fans of phone photography, there are other features HTC U11 offers and that you may find handy.

According to DxO, this phone offers extremely consistent performance in different shooting conditions, which makes its camera suitable for various situations. It also offers good color rendering, vibrancy in the outdoor scenes and plenty of details. HTC U11 features a 12 MP 1/2.55 inch sensor and an f/1.75 lens, which is why it performs so well in low-light conditions, without creating noise. It’s slightly larger than Google Pixel’s sensor, which is 1/2.3 inch, and this phone features an f/2.0 aperture.

Other plus sides of this phone are impressive outdoor shots, especially in bright light. Also, even photos taken with flash have good color rendering and proper exposure. As they point out in the report, HTC U11’s video is also the highest-scoring DxO has tested in a mobile device. They emphasize the autofocus as one of the fastest and the most accurate of all the phones they’ve tested.

On the minus side, what they point out is that image stabilization sometimes leaves some residual evidence of undesirable motion. In spite of this, it is generally very effective. Also, the exposures are sometimes brighter than other top-performing smartphones, which some users may find undesirable.

Judging from the review and test results, HTC U11 really offers a camera of impressive quality. You can take a look at the complete review and sample images on DxO’s website and explore this phone further.

I bought the HTC 10 after my Nexus 6P died, based partially on the good reviews about the camera (from DxO and others.) I’ve been disappointed. Low-light photos show much more artifacts than the 6P, the HDR shots aren’t nearly as good, and autofocus is nothing special. It’s not a terrible camera, and I’m not looking to replace the phone this year, but I don’t know how it scored higher than the 6P.

Moral of the story, I’ll believe this when I see more comparisons.
