I’ve seen some pretty close calls when it comes to motorsports and photographers, but this has to be one of the scariest. A collision during the Formula 3 race at the Macau Grand Prix between drivers Sophia Flörsch and Sho Tsuboi sent Flörsch’s car flying through the air, smashing directly into the Lisboa corner photographer’s booth at around 170mph.

It’s a scary incident to watch, but it must have been terrifying for those working in the booth. Those include photographers Minami Hiroyuki who suffered a concussion, Chan Weng Wang who is expected to stay in hospital for about 10 days due to a lacerated liver and race official Chan Cha who has a broken jaw.

The video below shows the incident from another angle and illustrates just how terrifying it really was. When a car’s coming at you that fast, you have absolutely no time to respond. You can see one photographer standing in the centre of the booth taking an almost direct hit.

Driver, Sophia Flörsch was diagnosed with a spinal fracture but later underwent successful surgery. Doctors report that she is stable with all limbs intact and active, and she has since posted an update to Facebook.

It just goes to show that at such events, no matter how safe we think we might be, anything can happen in an instant to change that.

We wish all those injured in the incident a speedy recovery.

The force that it hit the photographers tower is just phenomenal, the whole tower shook violently. How no one was killed is a bloody fluke. It’s one of the biggest shunts I’ve ever seen.
