Imagine this: you need to film a video with a specific background, but location scouting and permits seem like a hassle. Epic Light Media offers a solution: filming in front of a TV. This method allows you to achieve a look similar to a green screen setup, but with some key advantages. However, there are some drawbacks as well, and we’ll go through all of them.

Pros of filming in front of a TV

Firstly, this approach is significantly cheaper than green screen or shooting on location. No green screen or extensive post-production work is needed, nor do you have travel and permit costs. Also, it’s client-friendly. Clients can see the background in real time and provide feedback, eliminating the need to rent additional locations. Naturally, the choice of backgrounds is endless, too.

Cons of filming in front of a TV

Now it’s time for some challenges of this approach. While the TV backdrop can double as a green screen (or a light panel) in a pinch, you’re limited by the screen size and resolution. Technically, it can be tricky. Matching the lighting to the background image, controlling reflections on the screen, and hiding those pesky bezels around the TVs requires careful planning and execution.

Another hurdle is achieving a shallow depth of field. It is necessary to blur out the bezels, but it can make it difficult to focus on both the subject and the background. A full-frame camera is also ideal for this technique, limiting your camera options.

Considering this technique? Here’s what you’ll need:

  • Multiple TVs (size depends on your project)
  • Camera (ideally full-frame)
  • Lighting setup
  • Optional: teleprompter, wireless monitor
  • Computer to display the background image
  • Cables (HDMI, SDI)

So, is filming in front of a TV the next big thing? It depends on your needs. It can be a great option if you’re on a budget and have a forgiving background. However, traditional methods might still be the way to go for high-resolution productions with complex backgrounds. Still, make sure to watch the video for great examples, along with many tips on how to make this technique work.
