In August of last year, Takara Tomy and Canon teased something new. Two Canon EOS R5 “cameras” that transform into either an Autobot or a Decepticon transformer. At the time, it seemed that the items would only be being released in Japan, but now, it looks like they’re hitting a wider release. They’ve also added a third Canon Transformer to the collection, too!
Joining Optimus Prime and Refraktor is Nemesis Prime. This one also transforms into a Canon EOS R5, making the set of three look pretty much identical when they’re “in disguise”. But when they transform into robots, the three look quite distinct with their unique colouring.
Starting around 2:42 in the video above, we get to see the new Nemesis Prime addition to the lineup. All three of them appear to be largely identical in form, made from the same components – hence why they all turn into an EOS R5 – but the different paint jobs on each of them does make them interesting Nemesis Prime is actually the best looking of the lot if you ask me. Naturally, the two existing Optimus Prime and Refraktor models are also still available as well as the new one.
Initially only available to buy in Japan, you’re now able to buy from Hasbro Pulse in the UK, Europe, USA and Canada – except Quebec, apparently. The new Nemesis Prime is actually showing up to be a little cheaper than the first two. Optimus Prime is available for $144.99 (although it’s currently sold out), as is Refraktor (for whom stock is available). Nemesis Prime, though, is currently $131.99, but that’s perhaps just because it’s on pre-order right now.
As with Optimus Prime and Refraktor, Nemesis Prime is 80% scale compared to a real Canon EOS R5. You also have the ability to remove the 24-105mm “lens” from the camera body itself. The Canon-branded lens cap acts as a shield, and he also comes with a little camera of his own. Naturally, this little camera is non-functional, as is the camera that the robot itself turns into. It’s a shame they couldn’t figure out a way to put a little wireless spycam or something in here. With the size of electronics today, they could’ve easily done it, even if the quality hadn’t quite been up to that of the real Canon EOS R5.
Nemesis Prime is available to pre-order now for $131.99. Optimus Prime and Refraktor are both available to buy now for $144.99 however, Optimus is listed as out of stock at the time of writing. There doesn’t appear to be a pre-purchase option for the next run and no news when (or if) they’ll get more in, so if you really want Optimus, you’ll have to keep checking back.
