Viltrox AF 26mm F2.8 EVO

Viltrox has announced the AF 26mm F2.8 EVO, a full-frame autofocus pancake lens for Sony E and Nikon Z mounts aimed at photographers who want a genuinely pocketable everyday option without giving up control or image quality. At just 23.8mm thick and 130g, it’s the kind of lens you leave on the camera because taking it off feels like a mistake. It’s targeting street shooters, travelers, and anyone building a lightweight kit around a modern mirrorless body.

What immediately stands out is the dual-ring design. Dedicated aperture and focus rings on a pancake lens this slim is an uncommon combination. We normally expect lenses in this category to strip out the physical controls to save space. Getting both here, in a metal-bodied lens with dust and splash resistance around the mount, is a meaningful step up from the usual budget compact offering.

The 26mm focal length is quite an… interesting choice. It’s a tad wider than the classic 28mm street focal length, giving you an 81.2° angle of view. Pair that with a 0.2m minimum focus distance and 0.2x magnification, and you have a lens that can fill the frame with a subject surprisingly close up. This is useful for food, details, and environmental portraits. The f/2.8 maximum aperture is modest but expected for a lens this compact, and Viltrox claims it delivers solid sharpness wide open, aided by in-camera distortion correction.

Autofocus comes via a gear-type STM motor. That should mean quiet, reasonably smooth operation, so this lens is fine for stills and casual video. It won’t challenge the faster linear motors found on larger, pricier lenses. But for the uses this lens is designed for, it should hold up well. There’s also a built-in USB-C port for firmware updates and compatibility with the Viltrox Lens App. The magnetic front cap is a small but nice touch for a lens you’ll be constantly taking in and out of a bag.

A potential downside that I see is the lack of weather sealing beyond the mount gasket. The dust and splash resistance is limited to the rear, so this isn’t a lens you’d want to use confidently in a downpour. For a travel and street lens, more complete sealing would have made the pitch even stronger. Still, at $299, it’s hard to argue too hard with the overall package.
