Nikon has announced the second-generation NIKKOR Z 24–70 mm f/2.8 S II, a redesigned version of its standard zoom aimed at professional and advanced users. This update introduces a few notable design changes – most significantly, it’s the first 24–70 mm f/2.8 lens to feature an internal zoom mechanism.
Internal Zoom for Stability and Sealing
The new internal zoom design means the lens doesn’t extend when changing focal lengths. For photographers, that means more consistent handling, especially when used with gimbals or rigs. It also contributes to better sealing, with fewer moving parts exposed to dust and moisture.
The lens is 16% lighter than its predecessor and around 0.5 inches shorter when fully extended. This should make it a bit easier to carry and use for longer periods, particularly in run-and-gun scenarios or covering events like concerts, festivals, or weddings.

Updated Optical Formula and Close Focus
Nikon has trimmed the number of elements in the new optical design while maintaining (and they say, even improving) sharpness, contrast, and flare resistance. The lens now includes two ED and three aspherical elements and uses Nikon’s Meso Amorphous and ARNEO coatings to reduce flare and ghosting.
There’s also improved close-up capability, with a minimum focusing distance of 9.4 inches at the wide end and 1.1 feet at 70 mm. Maximum magnification at 70 mm is 0.32x, which may be useful for tight detail shots or product photos.
Silky Swift Autofocus System
The 24–70 mm f/2.8 S II is the first Nikon zoom to use the Silky Swift Voice Coil Motor. This magnetic drive system is said to be significantly faster and quieter than the previous model. Nikon says it’s up to five times faster, with a 50% reduction in audible noise. Focus tracking performance has also been improved during zooming, and focus breathing is reduced, which may benefit video users.
Functional Updates and Build
The lens includes both a control ring with a configurable click setting and two L-Fn buttons that can be customized. A focus limiter switch is also built in, along with a redesigned HB-117 lens hood that features a window for adjusting variable filters without removing the hood.
Despite the weight reduction, the lens maintains a solid, weather-sealed build with a 77 mm filter thread and a constant length of 5.9 inches.
