One of the more interesting photo techniques used in sports and racing photography is panning. Not only does it provide context to the speed and motion involved, it also isolates the subject matter, making for an interesting composition.
The concept seems simple, but as many years of shooting has taught me, it’s anything but. To help anyone wanting to get started with the panning technique, The Fuji Guys have shared a helpful tutorial on how to best approach the panning technique when trackside.
Throughout the five minute video, Marc explains the benefits of using the panning technique as well as tips to more effectively capture keepers. Unsurprisingly, the yield of successful images to not is going to be low, especially at slower shutter speeds, but when a shot it nailed, the results can be wonderful.
