What it’s like to photograph football players

Photographing football campaigns in one of the most aggressive and intense types of commercial photography there is. While some photoshoots will have a sushi chef for craft services, football sets have doughnuts, caffeine and loud music. Football is unlike any other sport to capture, and I absolutely love it.

One of the more important, and less talked about, aspects of a commercial photoshoot for a football campaign is the type of energy that exists on set. It is not like you are on the sidelines of the filed at an actual game where there is so much testosterone flying around that it is contagious (even to those that just came for the beer and peanuts). A photoshoot doesn’t have the real threat of getting crushed by a 400 pound lineman from the opposing team, instead it is a safe environment (except to those that don’t like being photographed). It is on the photographer (or on large sets, the producers) to have the setting prepped in a way that is conducive to getting the athlete in the zone.

Sports photographers face all sorts of crazy, unpredictable, and dangerous situations on the job. And recently, a photographer did a police job during a college football game.

When a fan ran onto the stage, the photographer sprinted toward him and tackled them to the ground. The man tried to escape, but the photographer was persistent and kept tackling him to the floor. The entire incident was caught on camera from different angles, showing this rather weird and potentially dangerous incident.

The World Sports Photography Awards has published the results of its third annual contest. And just like last year, the winning image captures the perfect moment that shows us a lot more than a sports game.

Sports photographer David Gray took the shot at the 2021 Australian Open. The stunning photo captures a moment of tennis player Naomi Osaka saving a butterfly that had landed on her skirt. With perfect timing, composition, and story, it’s no wonder that David’s image was selected as the best of the best.

It can be gnarly out there, especially if you’re a pro-surf photographer. This week a boat full of professional photographers, cameramen and pro surfers got more than they bargained for when they got hit by a true monster of a wave in Teahupoo, Tahiti.

The video above shows the camera boat first being it by a wave which it rides with relative ease, but then a massive wave sneaks in from the opposite direction, seemingly out of nowhere, sending the boat into an almost verticle position. Almost all of the passengers fall into the churning surf.

They say photography is often about being in the right place at the right time. Well, this photographer certainly was, but not for taking photographs. A ringside photographer covering the Golden Boy boxing card in Ontario, California at the Toyota Center on Saturday ended up catching a falling boxer as he fell from the ring after a particularly heavy blow.

John “Scrappy” Ramirez defeated Jan “Nito” Salvatierra inside the first round of the super flyweight bout. Ramirez landed a particularly effective punch on Salvatierra which sent him flying through the ropes of the ring.

Remember this ad from 12 years ago? This is why you don’t use on-camera flash for sports photography

Are you sitting comfortably? Great! Now, think back 12 years ago. Yes, that would be pre-multiple political upheavals, pre-pandemic and pre-full frame mirrorless cameras. It was a much simpler time, we were all so innocent then…but I digress.

Take a look at this Buffalo Wings commercial from 2010 that hilariously pokes fun at sports photographers using on-camera flash. The results of which, have a disasterous effect on the athletes.

Incidents and injuries are pretty much an essential part of contact sports like football. But the thing is – even those outside the field sometimes get hurt. NFL cameraman Don Cornelli recently got a ball straight into his face. Still, he kept his cool and just kept on filming, and it was all caught on camera.

It’s not often you get to have your 15 minutes of fame. But that’s exactly what happened when photographer and media reporter Julio A. Muñoz Menéndez was on the sidelines covering the recent Timbers FC vs Austin FC football match.

Well, we knew it was coming but now it’s official. Sigma has now launched the new 150-600mm f/5-6.3 DG DN OS Sports lens for mirrorless cameras. Specifically, that means the Leica L mount (utilised by Sigma’s fp and fp L cameras) and the Sony E mount. Still no word on any Nikon Z or Canon RF mount lenses coming from Sigma yet.

The new lens marks Sigma’s first ultra-telephoto zoom Sports lens designed specifically for mirrorless cameras. They say it offers much-improved performance and functionality over using a mount adapter with the old 150-600mm f/5-6.3 Contemporary for DSLRs, with fast accurate autofocus, better stabilisation and Dual Action Zoom system.
