The future of photography and the definitive answer to pineapple on pizza: Manfrotto tells all

The world is officially divided into two types of people: those who like pineapple on pizza, and those who are vehemently against it. Like the Valencians who sent death threats to the chef Jamie Oliver for putting chorizo in his paella, surely an Italian brand like Manfrotto would not support pineapple on pizza? In the interests of culinary world peace, DIYP spoke to Manfrotto’s parent company Videndum Media Solutions to find out, along with other more photography-related things.

You may not be familiar with the name Videndum, but for sure you know the brands Manfrotto, Lowepro, Joby, Gitzo and Savage Paper. Videndum Media Solutions is the name behind all of these ‘household’ photography names, and more. In fact, you could completely kit out a photography or video studio using products that are only produced by the Videndum umbrella. That is actually the company’s over-arching philosophy, explains Videndum’s Chief Marketing Officer Chris Carr. He tells DIYP about how Videndum has positioned itself to help content creators at every step along the journey.

It’s true that we’ve seen a lot of lights at the IBC Show, many of which have been interesting updates. But it’s rare that you find a company prepared to completely reinvent things and come up with something totally different.

DIYP were excited to discover Pipe Lighting which was showing off its truly innovative lighting designs. We chatted to CEO and co-owner, Eduard Bochanov to find out more.

We all strive for the highest quality of footage when we’re filming. But let’s face it, bad audio will sink your video faster than you can say ‘iceberg ahead’.

With that in mind, there are many many options of microphones for recording stellar audio, all suited to different needs. DIYP caught up with Colberg Ambassador Karim Yatrib to learn more about Synco‘s so-new-it-isn’t-released-yet G3 Wireless microphones.

OWC’s tiny SSD is strong enough to withstand a helicopter

It’s crazy fast, portable, and so rugged they actually tested it by landing a helicopter on top of it! Yes, you read that correctly, a real-life actual helicopter! If that’s not proof that OWC‘s latest portable storage device should hold up under even Indiana Jones-style conditions then I’m not sure what is.

DIYP was obviously intrigued by this claim, so found Sam Mestman from OWC to learn more about it.

Large productions using several cameras shooting 8K means that there will be a lot of data to both store and somehow get from the cameras to the rest of the creative team working on post-production. Add to this infrastructure problems and teams often being situated around the world and you’ve got some quite complicated problems to solve.

Luckily, OWC specialises in solving these exact issues. DIYP spoke to Sam Mestman from OWC to find out more about larger storage options for productions and teams.

Most of us are familiar with the name Sigma. Their photographic and video line lenses have become synonymous with affordable yet high-quality optics. But you may be less familiar with their Classic Prime line of lenses. DIYP talk to Sigma’s Jan-Willem Verschuuren to find out more.

In fact, Sigma has just launched the FF 65mm T2.5 cinema lens as part of the Classic Art Prime line lens range and the FF 65mm T1.5 Classic Prime Line. Jan-Willem explains that there has been a lot of demand for the 65mm lens because there was a large gap between the 50mm and the 85mm that were available previously. Finally, the set is complete.

Just when you thought DIYP couldn’t get enough COB LED lights, we had a little look at Colbor’s latest offering in the market. But this one isn’t the monster-sized light aimed at large productions and broadcasts that we’ve seen at IBC 2022. This one is firmly aimed toward the solo filmmaker or people with smaller budget needs. But it’s still just as awesome. We talk to Colbor ambassador Karim Yatrib about the new Colbor CL60.

The CL60 is an extremely compact COB LED spotlight which has a particularly unique feature. It can be used by itself as a stand-alone light, or it can be mounted together with up to 8 other CL60 lights to create a powerful light bank which uses one light as a master and the others as slaves.

Mo-Sys: Real life solutions for virtual worlds

Virtual production. It’s definitely a whole other world, but you’d be surprised to learn that many of the principles of photography and video are also important in virtual production and VR too. “It’s about using real-time computer graphics in your production,” explains Technical Director from Mo-Sys, James Uren.

James explains that it’s critical for the VR people working on the renders to know the exact location of the camera in the real-life scene. This is because they need to create the VR world from the exact same perspective, or the whole illusion fails. To do this, they track the camera using a tracking system. And that is one of the things that Mo-Sys does, along with producing camera robotics. James spoke to DIYP about their Star Tracker device.

What is B&H Photo doing in Europe?

B&H Photo, the photography and video specialists based in New York, are pretty much a household name, in the industry circles at least. They are the first to get new product information and the first usually to stock those products. There appears to be no photography or video-related gear that they don’t have available.

So you can imagine how unhappy I am that being European based, I cannot really take advantage of such a great store. However, Jason Smolesky was at IBC 2022 manning B&H Photo‘s booth, and DIYP were able to have a chat and find out exactly why a US-based company might be at a European trade show.
