Google flags medical photos of children as “sexual abuse,” sending parents under police investigation

Two fathers from two US states recently went under police investigation over “sexual abuse.” The reason: Google Photos’ algorithm flagged photos of their children, closed their accounts, and automatically reported them to authorities.

The thing is: none of the dads were involved in such despicable crimes. Both cases took place in the middle of COVID-19 lockdowns. The parents photographed their children in order to send the photos to the doctors, but Google couldn’t tell the context which caused them a lot of trouble.

Free online photo archive illustrates violence against women without re-traumatizing the victims

We’ve featured many free online archives so far, including those of newspaper photos, historic images, and sound effects. And now there’s another database we want to share with you. It’s small in size for now, but it’s of utmost importance!

A Serbian photojournalist group has started this database to illustrate violence against women and do it properly. It contains photos that can help journalists, writers, and bloggers tell a story without re-traumatizing the victims with graphic illustrations.

Apple recently announced a new set of features aimed at combatting Child Sexual Abuse Materials (CSAM), which include the ability to scan a user’s phone and iMessages. Since the announcement, the company has reiterated the numerous safeguards that they developed, but privacy advocates have bemoaned the potential for abuse and “mission creep.”

Instagram has just expanded its range of anti-bullying features. From now on, you can tell people who don’t follow you to buyy off without even interacting with them. Instagram allows you to limit DMs and comments from people who don’t follow you, while at the same time guilt-tripping bullies even more than before.

Apple announced last week that it would start scanning your iPhones and iCloud for photos of child sexual abuse. The new feature sparked a lot of controversy and concern among both users and other companies. When asked whether it would apply the same technology, WhatsApp said it wouldn’t, while at the same time calling Apple’s move “surveillance.”

Apple has announced that it’s about to increase its efforts to improve child safety. Starting from iOS 15, watchOS 8 and macOS Monterey, the company will scan your messages, Siri, searches, and photos in search for content that can be connected with child sexual abuse.
