A Quick & Dirty $4 Follow Focus

A follow focus is one of those things you don’t get until you shoot a bit of video. It its most simple form a follow focus allows you to easily focus a lens and to “remember” focus spots for later use.

There have been countless follow focus DIYs over the year and we have featured many of the ideas from uber simple Jar Opener and Postit Notes to complex K’NEX controlled rigs.
This hack by instructable user monkeywidget belongs in the “simple” basket. It is a lever that attaches to the lens via a big hose clamp and creates a focusing lever. The build is pretty trivial and can probably be made in less than 5 minutes if you have the parts.
It is beautiful? Arguably. Will it get the job done? It is better than nothing, and for 5 minutes of work and $4 it aint too shabby.
Get the full instruction over at Instructables.
Thanks for the tip, Jason.

I still prefer the jar opener. The rubber take out any herky-jerky motion and makes for a very smooth focus.
