Make a DIY smartphone GorillaPod from stuff you have at home

GorillaPod is a handy little tripod that can make your life easier on various occasions. And in this video, COOPH has an idea for making your own. You most likely already have all these items and tools at home. But even if you don’t, it will cost you a couple of bucks to get them and make your own DIY GorillaPod.

YouTube video

You will need:

  • A binder clip
  • A threaded rod
  • A hex key
  • Nuts and washers
  • A coil of wire
  • Duct tape
  • Pliers
  • A drill
  • And of course: a smartphone

How to make:

Start by cutting four pieces of wire of equal length. Put the washers onto the rod and pinch the middle of the wire between the washers. Use the drill with a hex key to weave the wire tight. This will make one leg of the “GorillaPod,” and repeat this step to make the remaining legs.

Now drill a hole in the base of the clip and fix it onto the screw. Bend the legs into place and use some duct tape on the clip (to protect the phone), and some on the sharp ends of your “GorillaPod” legs.

Finally, put your phone in the clip, place the DIY GorillaPod where you need it – and shoot away!

COOPH team has created the DIY GorillaPod with four legs, but I guess you can go with three as well. Or maybe even five – so you can even try to replicate the “Octopus” JOBY launched last year. Make sure to watch the video for demonstration of the building process, and let us know if you make your own!
