If Murphy’s Law has taught us anything, it’s that when you forget something, that’s when you will need it most. If you need to protect your external hard drive and you have forgotten the protective case, Zach Ramelan has a solution for a quick fix. He’ll show you how to turn the hard drive’s packaging into an emergency protective case.

Basically, what you need to do is just take the plastic packaging and cut off a piece so you can attach the hard drive’s cable. Then, cut a hole at the top of the hard drive’s cardboard box and slide the USB cord through it.
Now, put the drive inside the plastic cover, and then place everything together in the cardboard box. And voila, there’s your emergency protective case. Since it involves cardboard and plastic, make sure to cut a few extra holes to enable ventilation. You don’t want anything to catch fire, do you?
To make things clear, this is a temporary solution and can’t really replace a dedicated protective case. But hey, sometimes you gotta work with what you’ve got, and I guess a DIY solution is better than no solution.
