The V and A museum is opening a huge new photography centre this month

The esteemed Victoria and Albert Museum in London is opening a brand new centre later this month. It’s dedicated entirely to photography and the enormous collection that the museum houses.

The museum is based in Kensington, near Harrod’s, the Natural History Museum, and the Albert Hall. It is a must for anyone visiting the city, especially now that so many important historical photographs will be on display in the new gallery.

The first part of the centre opened in 2018, but the second part will be opening its doors on May 25, 2023. Once complete, it will be the largest permanent photography exhibition in the UK. The collection contains over 500,000 prints and images and includes the vast Royal Photographic Society Collection.

The centre will comprise seven galleries in total, showing the rich history of the medium reaching back 200 years to the birth of photography. Two of the galleries will house rotating exhibitions of contemporary and experimental photography from around the world. Other spaces will look at the process of photography and how it is preserved.
