A new Leica Monochrom camera is on the way, paired with a new prime lens. The specs have now leaked, telling us more about the camera, and there are also some leaked photos to show us what it will look like. Judging from the specs, the new Leica will have the highest dynamic range so far. And as far as design goes, it will omit the iconic red dot.
The upcoming lens is Leica Black Summilux-M 50 f/1.4 ASPH, a fast prime lens for Leica L mount. It will reportedly come with some improvements over the existing version. It will have 11 aperture blades for smoother and rounder bokeh. The focusing distance will be improved to 0.45m, and Leica has reportedly updated the lens’ performance (although I’m not exactly sure what this means). The new 50mm lens will be compact, similar in size and design to the Summilux-M 35mm f/1.4 ASPH.
These are the leaked camera specs:
- Monochrome BSI CMOS Sensor with Triple Resolution Technology (60/36/18 MP)
- ISO range: 125 to ISO 200,000
- 15 stops dynamic range (the highest ever in a Leica camera)
- 256 GB internal memory
- Apple MFi & Leica FOTOS support
- No red dot
- Aluminum top cover
- Scratch-resistant black paint finish
- Sapphire monitor cover glass
- Dark chrome OVF coating
- Weight (camera): 461g (without battery)
- What’s included:
- Leica M11 Monochrom camera
- Body cap
- Hot shoe cover
- Battery (BP-SCL7)
- Charger Set (BC SCL7) & USB cable
- Leica FOTOS cable
- Carrying strap
- Quick Start Guide
Even the price has leaked! If it’s true, this camera will cost over €9,000 (~$9,800 USD). The official announcement date should be on April 13, which is two days from now. So, I guess this is when we’ll officially learn more about the new gear from Leica.

I’d be happy with an M9 Monochrom. I’m not fussy 🙂
Made specially for dentists and lawyer as an expensive fashion accessory. Might as well wait for Pentax’s monochrome body
Obviously I‘m neither hip nor rich enough to understand haha. I do understand the business model though, as long as there are people who buy this – fine. 😁
Every dentists dream
Too rich for my blood. Still shooting 100 asa in 35 and 120.
John, THAT’S getting too rich for MY blood these days. I end every one of my Medium articles with “…and if you found the article useful or entertaining, then please consider buying me a coffee or donating a small sum.
It helps me to create more fun and inspired content like this…and of course, to buy film for my street photography. (Have you seen the price for Kodak’s Portra 400 lately??! :) )”.
🤣
We have to appreciate without envy that every M product since they entered the digital world was sold without any commercial problems.
Even the M10D, a digital model in RAW only and without rear screen was sold within a year.
The same with lenses, the thambar a lens without sharpness was completely sold.
Martin Czermakactually the m9 sensor is prone for corrosion
Yes but they offered free change for the first time. I never had a M9.
I stood at the decision M11 or not.
Then i went to Hasselblad and bought a X2D for the same money.
With the advantage of AF, IBIS, 1,7x llarger sensor, 100 MP etc etc
Martin Czermak plus is looks great
Bought the same, and NO regrets 👍💙
Joey Campagna yess! A modern 2020+ design instead of a 67 years old post-WW II design.
Martin Czermak Beautiful system. Matt just posted a video on this subject a few days ago https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xIqlm8AGc_w
Martin, unfamiliar w that camera, but of course I’ve heard a lot of good things in general. So, do you by any chance have the/an ~105mm lens w that?
I’d really love to comp the overall look and feel of some shots w that combo, vs say, a Pentax 67II w/ the second version 105.
For the more-money-than-sense crowd, I presume.
Mark Beach and for those who can afford it and love the qualities of their Monochrom series. Obviously, you’re not in that group.

Marcus Stahlhofer I would much rather spend the money on a hasselblad x2d than a glorified xpro 3, not to say its a bad camera, for my use personally, the hasselblad would be a much better option
Personally I would too, but that’s because I wouldn’t appreciate enough the peculiarities of a rangefinder to justify the price. And I’m sure there are plenty of others who would rather spend the money on a Sony A1 with GM glass. But Leica doesn’t consider these as competition as the M11 is in a league of its own which has its own clientele. Lastly, don’t compare an M11 Monochrom with a Summilux to an x-pro. That’s ridiculous, whatever you may think of Leica and its products. Shooting with a true monochrome camera is a whole other experience, not to mention the build quality, etc.
Lee Wong And just to qualify my previous comment, I shoot without the SL2-S and Q2M. No no rangefinders, but I stand by the build quality of Leica gear (both its cameras and glass).
Marcus Stahlhofer fair enough, I see leicas like people see iphones, Well rounded devices not the best in anything, but as a package they’re incredible cameras, and yea now that you mention it, I do shoot with A sony A1 and GM Lenses lol
Why do they think we want black and white cameras that bad?
why do you think you are the target group?
Stefan Hodgden I tried one years ago, and the detail and “look” was amazing…
Stefan Hodgden You’re clearly not their target group. But don’t worry; Leica’s monochrome cameras have been selling rather well, including their previous M Monochrom and Q2 Monochrom series. Just not to you, I guess 😏
Stefan Hodgden unlike color sensor, it doesn’t use bayer matrix. That makes huge differences.
Stefan Hodgden I would love a monochrome. Right now I have a Q2 and an M10-R Black Paint (the BP is the reason I didn’t get the M11. I love the BP). Anyway, with retirement a year away, I don’t see a monochrome in my future. However, both the Q2 and the M10-R can produce very nice black and white images. Still…
Chris Lloyd Care to elaborate?
35k?
Andrea Sandomenico right ?!?!
Leandro Martins Photography I was taking the piss out of Leica prices
