First major win for the Nikon Hacker team – removing the 30 minutes (or 29:59 if you wanna be picky) video recording limit on Nikon DSLRs .
Ever since DSLRs introduces video capabilities, there has always been a recording time limit for 30 minutes. Interestingly enough, this limit is not coming from hardware of software restrictions, but rather from a regulatory requirement that classifies devices recordings over 30 minutes of video as Camcorders, thus increasing their custom duty rates.
While Nikon’s hacked firmware is not nearly as advanced as CHKD or MagicLantern, it is slowly making its moves into becoming a reality. (Why make it so hard Nikon? Why? See what MagicLantern did to Canon and how it helped embrace the 5D +ML as a beloved tool for videographers).
The first release with a significant firmware hack is now released and is compatible with D5100 and D7000. With the first feature being removing that video recording time limit restriction.
I think this would turn out to be a major milestone for the Nikon Hacker team. As with any hack the more incentive someone has to use it, the bigger the relevant community gets, thus expediting the development.

Great and useful. But the sensor will be able to withstand a heating more than 30 minutes?
Good point that is what many have said. Also if you are really doing film making how often do you need to run a shoot for .. the idea is you are setting up each shot. Action,cut next
some people may want to record log segments e.g.: children’s talents show or an event like a press conference. So there is a need for more than 30 minute.
People have reported recording hour long segments (back to back recording) so it’s possible in regards to the heat issue.

I have a D5100, done the firmware about 3 years ago and usually record my personal live shows, back-to-back (52min videos) for about 2 or 3 hours on HD (2 to 3 videos), with 2 batteries, without a problem. Recently I purchased a power adapter and I did record my wedding, over 4 hours of back-to-back videos (5 videos of 52min each) without a problem. I’m looking forward for the D5500, cause of the cheap AF-P 10-20 ultra wide lens, touchscreen, 4k video, but no hack for the video max time, so I will have also to keep my D5100 body for long term videos :-(

30 minutes would be great. My D3s only records a maximum of 5 minute clips. Lame. Hack that!
