Zhongyi Optics has released Mitakon 85mm f/2.8 1-5x, a new super macro Lens for full frame cameras. It features a wide magnification range for photographing subjects at different sizes. It also offers a very long working distance, so you don’t scare away your subjects by getting too close.
As the name suggests, the Mitakon 85mm f/2.8 1-5x has a pretty wide magnification range, from 1x to 5x. When it comes to the working distance, Zhongyi writes that this lens has “one of the longest working distance” of any super macro lens in the market. The closest working distance at 5x magnification is 3.93” (10cm), and at 1x magnification, it’s 10.7” (27.2cm).
The lens consists of 12 elements in 8 groups and the company promises great resolution from corner to corner, as well as minimal chromatic aberration. It’s worth adding that it can only work for shooting macro and can’t focus to infinity.

Here are the specs:

And take a look at some sample photos:

You can get the Mitakon 85mm f/2.8 1-5x in eight different mounts: Canon EF, Nikon F, Sony FE, Sony A, Pentax K, Sony E, Micro Four Thirds, and Fuji X. It’s available for orders and it’s already shipping. You get a tripod collar and an LED ring light with the lens, and the price of the kit is $499.

Very interesting. The longer working distance really helps with lighting. The MPE-65 has a 41mm working distance at 5x, so this gives us more than double that.
If it can deliver… it’s going to be a hit IMO. I’ve shot with the MPE-65 but made the move to Nikon last year. Now, this gives me a 1x-5x macro for Nikon at 1/2 the price of the Canon….nice!
For those who are interested in this lens: I have done a review here:

I’m interested in this lens. Not seeing the MFT version on the retailers, though, and currently I only have a MFT body.
