Magical photo of kestrel on a blossoming tree wins 2022 GDT members’ Nature Photographer of the Year

Every year, the German Society for Nature Photography (GDT) runs a competition exclusively for the Society’s members, in addition to its European contest where anyone can enter. Still, even the society members only submit lots of amazing photos – and the best among them have been selected.

GDT has announced the 2022 winners of its members-only contest, and this year, the flattering title was awarded to Thomas Hempelmann. His image shows a gorgeous kestrel sitting on a blossoming branch, but there are some lovely category winners as well, so let’s take a look.

Documentary film makers find themselves in unique vantage point to capture erupting volcano

We’ve been mesmerised for a while now by images and footage of the erupting Fagradalsfjall volcano in Iceland. But just this last week, The Cumbre Volcano in La Palma in the Canary Islands decided to join the action. The documentary video and photography team I Love the World happened to find themselves in the right place at the right time, with drones and a helicopter no less. They have been busy capturing the event and here we can share some impressive examples of what they have been witnessing.

Alfonso Escalero who owns the production company explained to Spanish news channel RTVE that they had been excited to be in La Palma initially to film a documentary about the beauty of the Canary Islands. However, on arrival, they “met hell” with some of the scenes of destruction from the volcano.

US National Parks considering Selfie Stations to take pressure off overcrowding

This Summer has seen record numbers of people ‘getting away from it all’ in the outdoors and visiting National Parks. Yellowstone saw its all-time maximum of 1 million visitors in July, and Zion National Park had a bizarre situation where people waited in queues for up to 4 hours for a basic hike! Some of these places are implementing innovative measures to combat the strain on nature, including designated selfie stations.

He visited the Fagradalsfjall volcano in Iceland and took aerial photos and videos of the eruption. And just like his other work, these shots will make your jaw drop in awe.
