Macro Meets Ultra-Wide in New Laowa 15mm f/4.5 Lens

Venus Optics is back with another lens that will likely appeal to the more adventurous side of your photography brain. The new Laowa 15mm f/4.5 0.5X Wide Angle Macro lens takes two seemingly opposite worlds—macro and ultra-wide—and fuses them in a surprisingly compact and lightweight package. If you’ve ever wanted to shoot close-ups with an exaggerated perspective, this might be a lens for you.

Close-Up with a Wide Perspective

The standout feature of the new Laowa is its 0.5x magnification. It’s technically a macro lens, but not one that fully replaces your 1:1 gear. What makes this lens interesting is how it brings that macro-ish reach to a 15mm focal length, capturing both the subject and a good chunk of the background in one frame. It allows you to get within 12.9cm of your subject, with just 36mm of working distance, offering plenty of creative potential.

And since it’s a Laowa lens, the distortion is reportedly well-controlled despite the ultra-wide 110.5° field of view. That makes it a compelling option not just for macro or nature shooters, but also for anyone shooting interiors, architecture, or stylized portraits.

The Build

Physically, the lens comes in at just 308g (about 0.68 lbs), which is light enough to slip into a backpack or carry around all day without grumbling about weight. The build appears solid, with a removable lens hood and metal housing, with a 62 mm filter thread. The 5-blade aperture produces 10-point sunstars. It may not be appealing to everyone, but hey – just think that some people buy and make filters to achieve this effect.

The lens will be available in six mounts, including Canon EF/RF, Nikon F/Z, Sony E, and L-mount. On the minus side, autofocus isn’t part of the package. The Laowa 15mm f/4.5 is manual focus only. But as a consolation prize, versions for Canon EF, Sony E, and Nikon Z support auto aperture and EXIF transmission. If you’re used to manual focus from other Laowa or Voigtländer lenses, this probably won’t be a dealbreaker.

Pricing and Availability

It’s hard not to appreciate what Laowa is doing here. They’ve made a niche lens even more niche—but in a good way. This isn’t your first lens or maybe even your third. But if you’re looking to experiment with perspective, get creative with close-ups, or just want something different in your bag, the Laowa 15mm f/4.5 might be worth checking out.

The lens is already available through Venus Optics and its authorized resellers. The company expects it to start shipping from May 22. At $399, it’s fairly accessible, and I think it’s worth checking out.
