It’s easy to forget that a beautiful place our home planet is. But when you take a step back, or rather 408km back, you can see all of its glorious beauty. French astronaut Thomas Pesquet reminds us of the beauty and uniqueness of the Earth. While onboard the ISS, Pesquet has taken some stunning photos of our one and only home.

In late April 2021, Pesquet took off for the International Space Station for the second time. For his second stay on the ISS, he has become the first French commander of the Station. But other than being an astronaut and an ISS commander, which is impressive on its own, he’s also an avid photographer. On his Twitter and Flickr pages, he shares the photos he has taken during his stay onboard the ISS.

The famous #KeyWest and the special Highway 1 that hops from island to island all the way south. The Naval Air Station Key West base is remarkable with its star-shaped airfield. https://t.co/5YC7vsfAbR #MissionAlpha pic.twitter.com/uAoqZDjYUt

Other than photos and some basic information, Pesquet sometimes shares humorous titles that follow them. So while his photos of the Earth will astound you, his humor will also bring a smile to your face.

Just like looking at the stars, looking at photos of the Earth from afar reminded me how small we are. And I personally find it to be a very liberating feeling. So, I hope that you’ll enjoy Pesquet’s photos as much as I did and that they will bring you a little peace today.

From space you get another perspective. Looking at the ice in this lake in #Canada I see shapes… like when looking at clouds on Earth. ☁ #MissionAlpha https://t.co/rHG1m2yYRH pic.twitter.com/taPNTNidbM

Guinea Bissau ??, that I haven't seen since my last mission four years ago (no I didn't visit all the places I photograph from space, unfortunately! https://t.co/U9cV9J4ylL #MissionAlpha pic.twitter.com/aWKeBuO7dg

More #EarthArt around the White Nile, which is obviously blue in reality ? https://t.co/DZQrJxEEg2 pic.twitter.com/ancuX35RMy

Hints of red and ochre, grey rocks and white clouds, flying over the Sahara (a plateau in #Chad here) is never boring. @astro_luca called it the skin of the Earth I think, and he is right, it does resemble skin. https://t.co/M0IOQ9LlS6 #MissionAlpha pic.twitter.com/NEfwl9lsPz

I remember taking a picture of the Quiberon peninsular during #Proxima. It is funny to think that I recognise the area easily from space whereas unfortunately I didn't get to visit it for real before #MissionAlpha! #Bretagne pic.twitter.com/mq2K4Bz8d3

Mecca! So bright at night that it ended up overexposed, as I wanted to see the city lights too. Happy end of Ramadan!

All the colours of a rainbow… and I imagine lots of birds and other wildlife in the San Francisco Bay National Wildlife Refuge.
