Canon has just announced the upcoming release of the latest addition to their speedlight lineup – the 430EX III-RT.  While still having the same zoom range (24-105mm) and guide number (141 ft at ISO 100) as the 430EX II, the updated unit is more compact and lightweight (10.41 oz vs. 11.6 oz) with updated controls.

But, the real kicker is that the 430EX III will have built-in wireless TTL functionality, previously only seen on the more expensive  600EX-RT.  The only downside is that the new model will only be able to function as a slave (50 Shades of Light).

In Canon’s press release, president and COO of Canon USA Yuichi Ishizuka is quoted as saying, “The new Speedlite 430EX III-RT provides photographers with a very responsive flash unit having new wireless capabilities that enable users to create more professional lighting effects than if they were to rely on their camera’s pop-up flash alone.”  Well, THAT was obvious.  But, I digress…

430EX III-RT Features

  • Wireless TTL
  • A more compact design
  • Zoom range of 24-105mm
  • Maximum GN of 141 ft. (43m) at ISO 100
  • Updated control dial
  • Larger dot-matrix LCD
  • Quicker recycle time
  • Shorter flash durations as low as 0.1 seconds (up to a maximum of 2.5 seconds)
  • Optional color filter to better adjust light temperatures in-camera
  • 10 custom functions and 8 personal functions for streamlining your on-the-go lighting process

The 430EX III-RT is scheduled for release in September 2015 and will carry an estimated price tag of $299.
