Viltrox has launched the NexusFocus F1, a PL to Sony E-mount adapter that brings autofocus control to fully manual cinema lenses. Introduced via Kickstarter, the project has already raised over $41,000, far surpassing its initial $10,259 goal with nearly a month still remaining.
Autofocus for PL Glass
Like all adapters, Viltrox’s NexusFocus F1 sits between a PL-mount lens and a Sony E-mount camera body. It uses Sony’s native phase-detection autofocus and subject tracking to drive external motors. This enables autofocus and control over focus, iris, and zoom (FIZ). It’s compatible with a wide range of cine and CineMod lenses.
Unlike LiDAR systems, which can struggle with parallax and require additional setup, Viltrox promises that NexusFocus leverages the camera’s existing AF system. This should provide you with a smoother and more straightforward operation. This could be useful for filmmakers working with vintage or manual cine lenses, but who don’t want to give up modern focusing options.

App Integration and Motor Control
When using the NexusFocus, you can manage it through a mobile app. It includes lens calibration tools and presets, with automatic calibration available in the iOS version. Once calibrated, the adapter remembers lens settings, allowing for quick setup in future sessions.
The adapter connects via Bluetooth for wireless control through smartphones or tablets. There’s a backlit display panel that shows lens status and operating mode. This can make it easier for solo shooters or small crews to manage lens control on set.
The Build
The NexusFocus F1 is small in size and built to last. The adapter is constructed from aluminum alloy and stainless steel, with a dust-resistant seal at the camera mount. Power is supplied via a standard USB-C port from an external source. A detachable tripod mount provides additional support when you need it.
