The Minimalist Photography Awards has just announced the winner of its 2025 edition. This year’s title of Minimalist Photographer of the Year goes to Alexandros Othonos for his quietly powerful series Threads of Memory’s.
Overall Winner – Embroidery Meets Photography
Selected from over 7,000 images submitted by photographers in more than 50 countries, Othonos’ work stood out for its delicate blend of conceptual minimalism and deeply personal narrative. His series was also awarded first place in the Conceptual category.
About the project, Othonos writes:
“This project is also a retrospective on past times, with my own creative intervention in each photograph. Back then, things were different, and in my opinion, although I didn’t experience most of that era, there was a unique charm to it. As I searched through these photographs, I felt a deep sense of nostalgia and emotion for my family. I believe that anyone who flips through an old family album will feel the same way, experiencing the weight of time and the emotions it carries.”
As an embroidery artist myself, I have to admit I was especially drawn to this series. I’ve combined photography and thread myself; I thoroughly enjoy the mix of media. But there’s something even deeper about stitching into old photos, adding a dash of nostalgia and deep emotion to both the process and the end result.
