Renaissance-inspired portraits win 2024 Minimalist Photography Awards

The Minimalist Photography Awards has unveiled the winners of its 2024 contest. Now in its sixth year, the competition saw an incredible display of talent and creativity, with over 3,400 submissions from minimalist photographers around the globe.

The Minimalist Photography Awards stands as a prominent platform dedicated to honoring and recognizing exceptional minimalist photographers on a global scale. Organized by Black & White Minimalism Magazine, the competition reflects the magazine’s unwavering commitment to promoting and showcasing the power of minimalist photography.

The title of Minimalist Photographer of the Year was awarded to Eva Chupikova, recognized for her captivating series of portraits titled Anna. Eva’s work exemplifies the essence of minimalist photography, masterfully demonstrating how simplicity can lead to profoundly moving and visually striking results. As the overall winner, Eva received the Grand Prize of $2,000. What’s more, her gorgeous series also brought her the first place in the Portraits category.

“Anna draws inspiration from the Renaissance, a period that celebrated the revival of classical artistic values and principles like harmony and proportion,” the artist explains. “Garments of that era were designed with intricate patterns, rich fabrics, and luxurious embellishments to symbolize wealth and social status.”

“In our contemporary world, garments are manufactured with cheap labor at low cost to maximize profits. The result thereof is that we are engulfed in material excess and overwhelmed by visual and information stimuli. Materialism is the ‘new’ symbolism of wealth and social status. In all this chaos, we yearn for a new sense of conformity and balance with our environment and ourselves. Whilst Anna conceptually is influenced by the Renaissance era, Anna’s vision is rooted in a more minimalist concept that eliminates the unnecessary, focusing solely on the essential – finding ‘beauty’ in simplicity.”

This year’s contest included 12 distinct categories, judged by a panel of esteemed industry experts. Reflecting on the winners, Milad Safabakhsh, President of the Minimalist Photography Awards, said

“These award-winning images invite viewers to embark on a journey of reflection, prompting them to appreciate the subtle nuances that define the minimalist aesthetic.”
