Make a $24 Ring Light From Christmas Lights

Make a $24 Ring Light From Christmas LightsOne of the things we are trying to deal here on DIYP is making ring lights without going into all the mess and (possible) danger that goes into wiring and sawing. Till now, we've were only half there with some IKEA based rigs that provided some nice bulb support, but we never made it all the way through to a really each hack.

Videographer Joel Loukus came up with the missing link. By using multiple Christmas lights around a wire frame he built The WreathLight. A Christmas Lights based ring light. (Dont miss out on the chi-ching sound, it really makes the light quality that much better).

One small but important tip from the video is to try and use the clear bulbs as they output more light don't get as hot.

Thanks for submitting Joel.

This would work so well in my studio!  Better than any others that I have seen, and I could build it myself.  I will have to get myself to the local craft shop for the wire wreath and down to Target or Walmart to pick me up some lights.  Thank you for a great idea!

Is there any particular reason why you can't build something around fluorescent ring bulbs like these? http://www.nextag.com/circular-fluorescent-bulb/shop-html

Sure, there's a bit of extra electronics involved, but it's not horribly complex, and can be bought readily assembled. All you need then is to build a good reflector.

Yes

Florescent lights produce a flicker if you shoot video of them improperly- it's managable if you have to do it, but its annoying to have your options restricted.

And also - contrary to incandescent lights - the ordinary fluorescent lights have a poor CRI (Color Rendering Index) wich means, not all wavelenghts of the full color spectrum.

Great idea!

I have been looking at the DIY solutions for a while, trying to figure out a rig for taking photos for my tattoo studio. Most were too stationary or fragile, but this is mobile and should be pretty sturdy. I am excited to give this a shot!

Finding some new ways to create light for my studio.

I am still in the middle, of creating my studio.  I already have the cameras and tripods and stuff.   But now I need money to create the studio.. Cheap is a good option so long as I create great images.  I am going to put this one on my list.  I have always wanted a ring light.

That was a pretty neat demo. It makes the Eyes look very creepy. Or maybe that was just The subject.

Great idea!

This is a really great idea! Not just for use as a ring light, but this could also be a nice prop for child photography or seasonal photography.

Ring in Eyes

At first glance I was impressed with this simple and inexpensive idea.  That is until I looked into the models eyes and saw the light ring reflection.  This would require some post work.
