How To Make A DIY Square LED Ring Light

Here’s a quick and easy DIY build you can use to spice up your collection of studio lighting. Kevin Kubota walks us through the process in the 12 minute CreativeLive session, below. He uses four of these 4′ LED strip lights he found at Lowes for $34 each, so this isn’t exactly a cheap only-need-stuff-you-already-own kind of build, but I imagine if you looked around a bit, you could source some less expensive lights. With that being said, however, Kubota prefers the more expensive LED lights of florescent lights for a few reasons. Primarily, that they are much more durable than florescent; also that they draw very little power, making them ideal to use on location with his AlienBees portable power pack.
He basically brackets them together into a square shape, but he also adds spigots to two of the strips to make it really convenient to attach to light stands. There’s a couple variations that can be made as far as wiring, Kubota has each of his light strips operating off their own household plug, but he does mention they can all be wired together if you wanted to only have to plug into one outlet. He keeps his separate because he sometimes disassembles his square LED light to use in other setups, too.

The wires exit the metal strip housing and there does not appear to be any grommet to prevent chafing of the wires. The wires need protection from the metal edge of the hole they come through or there will eventually be a bright show with lots of sparks.
